hats the garage I would expect that car to reside in Mac
cheers bloke, did you spot the beer fridge?Where did you get that TVR sign?
I got it years ago when TVR were at the NEC motorshow back in around 2000 I think when I had a Griff'. A mate knew the bloke who got to make the motorshow signs for TVR and they got this one wrong as the shiney bit is on reverse so they were throwing it in skip. So I had it and did the bit of painting around the edges in black and in the 'R' bit and polished it up. I tried using it as a key fob, but didn't work out.

Your garage Mac is something else!
I seem to have 1 million more things than you in mine.
Over the last couple of days I've changed my wheels back to my road wheels, reset my suspension and touched up areas on the chassis that I couldn't reach last winter, (areas where the two post lift raised the car on the corner plates).
While it was up in the air I took the opportunity of trying Grahams exhaust system which he said was very quiet.
I had fitted his exhaust system previously but the rear bracket was in the wrong place as it came from a pre-cat car.
I had the bracket cut and welded in the correct position and fitted the exhaust system to my car.
It just goes to show how all these cars can be slightly different as even with jiggling about with the exhaust system mounts the tail pipes were much lower than my original system.
I took the car for a drive and surprisingly the sound seemed exactly the same!
Back in the air, I removed the exhaust system, cleaned mine up and re-fitted it to the car.
It was a trial and error thing that didn't work. I thought I would get a quieter exhaust but obviously the increased capacity of my 5.5 creates more noise and there was actually nothing wrong with my system!
The road seemed quieter last night so I went for an hours drive with our Jack Russell on the passenger seat, he seemed to hate every minute of the journey!

Like we discussed previously you know my thoughts on the exhaust Peter substantial increases in breathing inc bigger displacement etc creates more racket not necessarily in a good way either & more so catless, but back on topic my spare GKN is currently being rebuilt now I have sourced the bearings shims and seals I have only had it in storage for about 8 years one of the bearings is shared with a Massey Ferguson tractor as is so often with bearings shared with other strange machines many alternator sealed bearings are shared with motorcycle front wheel bearings

I'm still trying to figure out whats causing the clunk back in the diff area when my car shunts a little... my guess now is that when I changed to the powerflex bushes last year, something was not put together completely right or tight. It occurs when I go on or off the gaspedal. Cluck clunk. It was better before I changed diff bushes!
Any similar experiences?
Any way Mac nice garage!, Alex nice fuel pump and Peter, what really helps the in car drone and sound levels is a turbo I was actually going to design a y piece with a silencer in it to get the drone down... maybe clive F can do something? Theres also the solution of fitting a blind third exhaust tube from the rear going to a dead end, it has to have a certain curve, it will remove drone at a certain rpm depending on length...

The clunking it's a strange phenomena, I can introduce a clunk in mine if I back the throttle on and off.
John Reid overhaul my diff at 35,000 miles. He said it had wear in it and it was adjusted the best that it could be.
All my CV joints have been renewed and the prop shaft joints are in perfect condition.
I think that this is as good as it gets. Maybe you shouldn't be too worried.
As for a turbo, I think I would have to get four-wheel-drive to contain the power!
I found that a sleeved exhaust makes more noise out the tail pipes but far less inside the car! still use the big Catt so it's keeping the overall noise level down to about 105bds at 4000 revs, maybe that's the solution but it is louder with the roof off,,, swings and roundabouts.
I can also induce a smal amount of knocking from the rear end with abrupt on off throttle at low speeds,, interestingly when your driving hard i find there's no play and it's very nice!

As you say, normal driving, no clunking, drive at 1500 rpm and introduce a bit of throttle on and off and you have clunking .
Same as the GKN then I have yet to drive an early car that dont and yet to drive any of em that hasn't not got any lash in the final drive to be honest Gassing Station | Chimaera | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
