What did you do in the garage yesterday?

I have to say for once this isn`t something mine ( GKN ) suffers from.
Even low rpm there`s no clonk.
Exactly which proves what I was saying to Peter just the other day the lash can be dialed out of these diffs with careful assembly its safe to assmeble loose but to assemble tight life is short thats why I think they was assembled slack at the factory (i.e pinion to crown-wheel mesh) .... safe Even low rpm there`s no clonk.

Mine was clunking.
CV joints changed.
Now not clunking.
Result!................ CV joints changed.
Now not clunking.
In your case that it seems was the cause.
It seems that all cars are different. The fact that we are practically sitting over the diff makes us much more aware than a boggo saloon.
I did CVs, bushes, etc, etc. Possibly a little better but still by modern day standards, a little clunky.
I accept and live with it as you only hear it when you induce it.
That doesn't mean it's right, just that it's there!

You got to have some pretty shagged CV joints to have rotational play IMO
Mr Mathew Smith, spinster of this parish and my TVR guru, test drove the car, had it up on the ramp, and declared that my diff was fine, but my CV joints had pkay in them and, in time and track days would break. After fitting the new CV joints (Shaft Tech, £30 each), he declared that the splines on my drive shafts had a tiny bit of play in them, but that my diff was not duff. All transmission components have done 98,000 miles, and at least 30 track days.

I wasn't disagreeing with you QBee just saying that a CV needs to be pretty fked to have rotational play and Ido mean proper fked 😱 not forgetting I deal with this construction of CV joint on a daily basis so my opinion is fresh After fitting the new CV joints (Shaft Tech, £30 each), he declared that the splines on my drive shafts had a tiny bit of play in them, but that my diff was not duff. Fancy a spanner in the works,,,,,
I've Driven Sheels Red Chim and I've had it on the ramp and felt for play in the dif by rotating a back wheel, very smooth and barely any play,,, the car has no clunking from the Dif when driving
Mine as Sardonicus points out is slack but does suffer the knocking, and my CV's have been replaced to no effect!
Rich (sheel) car seems to have had a very easy life, late chassis etc but it's mint, never seen rain I reckon, maybe it's a one off or it's been driven gently since birth but his dif is silent and the car is easier to drive.
So there must be other cars out there with a similarly smooth dif as Rich's car,,,,
Richie did have a little off with the car and the rear end came round on him very suddenly and he has mentioned to me he was concerned the dif might have been part of the cause,,, since re building the car and the dif has not been touched it's been fine so that's now been largely discounted but who knows?

Well its not really what i have done to the car but more what a weel known TVR specialist is doing to mine (in a gargae)
What he (Mat Smith) has found is:-
Damaged (Dented) and rusty lower wish bone. this will be replaced. (possible safety issue)
Leaking clutch master/slave unit. Will be replaced.
Full 12K service, including Fuel line check for cracks etc..
Full wheel alignment + damper adjustment.
One New radiator fan- upgraded version apparently.
Hand brake adjustment.
Let's hope the list is not too long.

Saw your car at Mat's, Fox430.
Mine was in for CV joint replacements (4). I sourced joints from Shaft Tech (2wd 1991 Sierra Cosworth). They came complete with boots, bolts and grease, but the bolts were too short and the boots the wrong type, so Mat used my old ones, as we had only recently replaced all the boots. The £60 per joint saving over TVR Parts price was still worth it. I will report back if I gave any issues with them.
Mat also changed my front pads. I had tried Carbon Lorraine, which seemed fine on track, but made the most annoying squeal at low road speeds. As I use the car 80% on the road I decided to end my misery and go back to Hawk pads. Fitted, silent, bliss. So conclusion - CL may well be excellent track pads, but I cannot live with them around town. I will report back on the Hawk pads on track shortly. They are a new improved compound, and I am doing a track day a week on Sunday on them.

Bring the race pads Anthony, 5 min change and you can compare
I swapped my pads around on the Brembo's and my brakes are quieter but still the odd squeal,,
Pads are to hard to my untrained eye. I'll also be getting some Hawk but I've now got about 4 sets of almost new pads lying about and I'm determined to get some use out of them.

Hey Foxy. Your shocks look new so how was the hole in your wishbone missed when the new shocks were fitted? or did you know about it What he (Mat Smith) has found is:-

Must have been lucky with my car, even with the old Lucas system I never really suffered the shunting issues apart from once which really was down to ignition issues,a change of dizzy cap new leads etc etc and it cleared.Since installing the canems it's a different beast again,1100rpm in 5th and she is perfectly happy and will sit like this then pull away smooth as silk, the whole car drives so well and others that have driven it are amazed at the difference ,if there was ever a mod I would recommend this would be it,makes for so much more of a relaxed drive and even if you were a bit slack on your rear end the smoothness of power with a new eco would probably help the clunks etc.Obiously there is no substitute to having the drive in good condition but any shunting/engine misbehaving will be noticeable Ian's amplified if your back end is slackI've Driven Sheels Red Chim and I've had it on the ramp and felt for play in the dif by rotating a back wheel, very smooth and barely any play,,, the car has no clunking from the Dif when driving

Portzi:- I bought the car like that i did not see this hole (how i don't know )
The previous owner had the new shocks and outriggers done.
And it past an MOT like this.

These cars are definitely eyes wide open Simon. I have heard lots of good reports from TVRCC members who live over in swampy , sorry Norfolk who use Matt smith and they can't speak highly enough of him. The previous owner had the new shocks and outriggers done.
