About 6 weeks before its retirement, XH558 overflew my grandchildren's birthday party in our garden at about 150 feet (it felt like 15 feet), on its approach run to overfly the Newark Showground. It was so close, and absolutely overhead, you felt you could see the individual rivets.

No warning, no time to get the camera out, there was just a roar and it appeared over the hedge. Evocative beyond words.

Did the 40 or so kids (aged 4 - 8) even notice? Nope.
Did the mums stop talking long enough to notice? Nope.
Did the dads and granddads notice - you bet we did. Big grins all round.

I often find myself, in my home office, working to the sound of six Merlin engines as the BBMF head off to another air show down south - we are right on the flight path as they navigate visually by the A46 and A1. Ditto the Red Arrows. I guess I must be getting old, because the sound of those engines move me so much that typing becomes very hit and miss, as it is now, thinking about what they mean to me.
Stop it.

My little cottage in the country is about a mile or so from Old Buckenham airfield... One of the professionals (as in Bodie & Doyle and who's shown me round the plane) keeps his Stearman there... If I'm in the garden I always know it's the Stearman coming over, that huge radial engine in the nose is so distinctive... Stunning looking bright yellow bi-plane biggrin

The annual air show is a delight.. If I'm home I can drink beer and fire up the bbq and watch iconic aircraft fly over the cottage at low altitude from the comfort of my own garden smile

My BiL was a Jaguar pilot back in the day, and some years ago we went to a family day at Coltishall... For some reason which I can't properly explain I got all damp eyed when the Lancaster and Spitfire did the flyby... Like Anthony, just thinking about it now has made me feel a bit emotional....

And I am completely devoid of any emotion, feminine side, or ghey leanings...

I am a proper bloke, and I deny any rumour of girly feelings. No really.

Ignore the bit above about being damp eyed, I made it up.

Did I mention I've just bought an Aston?
biggrin
You really must join the red trouser brigade then Chilli. When I was a member, the eastern region organised a visit to Coningsby at the invitation of the BBMF squadron commander, for a guided tour of the aircraft. It was an 'all close up and personal' tour. Mine is second from the right, back row.
'Och aye, and it didnae cost a penny' so you'll fit in nicely. thumbup

Fixed a few wiring issues at the front of Wendy. Found a load of bare twisted wires. Tried soldering but couldn't get clean wire to take solder so used bullet connectors and silicone gel. Will finish off today when the rain stops. Wiring is a mess so will list out and build new looms.

Your godfather will always be remembered.

With the new pension scheme the MOD have introduced, retention is a thing of the past unfortunately, as most troops in my trade group are leaving at 12years service obtaining £10,000 loyalty bonus, as the 22year pension has been abolished for servicemen who have not yet signed on before April 2015.frownit is sad as alot of personnel are leaving who would have had a great career serving Madge frown,

The word hero is overused on so many occasion these days, but my God he was a hero, and yet the word doesn't seem enough in this case.

A very unassuming and quiet man who never really understood what everyone else thought about him. The VC episode is enough for most but to be flying with 617 Squadron and another Lanc drops a bomb on him from 6,000 feet........... eek

Resealed the insulation under the bonnet where it was falling off and then applied another layer of sticky- back insulation on top directly above the Y piece and turbo to keep the bonnet temps as low as possible. Also ordered some more titanium exhaust wrap for the exposed part of the manifolds.

First world problems in my garage - in the week and a bit that I've had the Chimaera, my eyes kept being drawn to the wonky rear badge.

So yesterday, off it came after much sweat and cussing. One of the two lugs snapped and when I saw that rear badges can cost circa £90.00 for a decent replacement, decided to "make do and mend".

Whilst the badge was off, I touched up the black background with some matt black paint and did a decent enough job.

With one lug and a good dollop of black sealant, the badge is now back on. Correctly aligned of course.

Having read your introductory thread, I suspect that a wonky rear badge may be the least of your worries! Come on, it's time you gave us another update.
