I am renewing the carpets. Got all the bolts out except the top ones. They loosen ok but after a few turns they tighten up again almost as tight as when tightened if you know what I mean. I am afraid to push on as I know the nut is in the fiberglass.
Anyone got any pointers please?

I'm pretty sure you'll find it's actually through the fibreglass and into something more substantial like the chassis...

Er... top bolts certainly don't go into the chassis...

Other than some Plusgas though I can't think of too many other ideas unfortunately.

Yes you're right, the top mounts are only secured by a captive nut in fibreglass. I know some people will find that shocking but there you go.
Have tried releasing fluid but was hoping I was missing something else. Id be afraid if the nut started to spin I was in big trouble.
Thanks for the replies anyway.

Just removed these bolts on my car and had the same problem. I used release agent and gave it plenty of time to penetrate. Then I slowly undid the bolts two flats of the spanner then back one and so on. Once they are out you will see that the problem was that the bottom threads of the bolt are rusty where they have gone through the glassed-in bobbin and out into the wheelarch.

Are they visible from underneath for pre-cleaning the threads? I was thinking of removing mine to fit extenders (a la S forum) to bring the belt forwards and off the carpet, thought my problem is more to do with knackered inertia reels - belt constantly locks when I am trying to put it on, then won't retract when I take it off. And I fancy having some nice beige ones to match the seats.....

I have already had the bottom seat belt bolts out to fit harness eyes. That was a right PITA. My outer ones were ok, but only because I had new outriggers last year. One inner one came out ok, but the other took a lot of work as the spacer behind it was rusted solid to the bolt and the buckle arm. When we eventually got it off I had to saw through the bolt to release the arm.....

The alternative is to use too much force, shear the bolt off, and have to drill it out, as Alun450 did. Now THAT Is a true PITA.

I will give that a go. I had a look from under the arch but can't get at them to effectively clean the threads.

the nuts are pretty firmly mounted in the body , I had to use a 3 foot bar on the socket to get enough leverage to undo mine recently and the nuts never moved.

Yeah ok Qbee, no need to remind us! I hasten to add I've applied thousands of bolts to buildings and I'd also suggest I'd got the bolt hot rather than over zealous yanking, its easily done!

If it's anything like the earlier S Series that Bobbin or nut is welded to a chunky lump of steel bonded into the body that goes round the top half of the wheel arch...... you won't pull it out!

.

I doubt that you could get to them from underneath.

I removed the bolts on my car to carry out the 'S' forum seatbelt extender mod.

However someone on the Griff (or Chim?) forum pointed out that it altered the strain path of the belt guide and was actually trying to bend it.

So with this in mind I made up these plates which keep the guide in its normal orientation.

Belt now only touches the carpet at the bottom just above the reel and retracts much more freely.
