Hi all.
Just wondering what the collective think.
When starting the car, it clicks, as if the starter is kippered, and does this a few times occasionally, then fires up.
Could this be the starter motor giving up?
Thanks.

it's one of a possible few things :-

1) The starter solenoid on it's way out

2) The feed cable from the battery is worn out and the build up of resistance in the cable is causing poor supply to the starter (use a jump lead to bypass & test)

3) Poor earth (use jump lead to bypass & test)

4) Duff battery on it's way out

5) Duff wire/connection for the solenoid (small wire to the starter)

Regards

Mike - if it starts then starter motor is possibly OK. I have just had new starter motor fitted and then got the click and no start issue and, like you, if you keep turning the key it would eventually fire up. Fitted mod wise hot start kit and hey presto all now works fine. When it wouldn't start before it wasn't always hot but this seems to have solved the issue now anyway. From my perspective at least it was £37 well spent and even me with no mechanical/electrical skills got the kit fitted in about 20 minutes which I was really pleased with. So,it might be worth you giving this a go before investing in a new starter motor.

Thanks for the help folks.
Richard, funny you should point out the modwise kit, I've just been searching and the symptoms do seem to point that way, I've seen them in eBay for £39 ish so may take the plunge...
Electrics are my nemesis though

I got the starter motor clicks also until a final dead click. Fitted a NEW starter motor from London & Essex Auto Electrics, £104 all in delivered. 2kw motor not the standard 1.7kw. Solved 3 years of hot start problems even with the hot start kit fitted. Spins and starts now, like a Dervish!!

Had this issue too. Carl Baker's new Meta alarm/hot start cure/remote boot release installation package cured mine. Includes 2 new key fobs. thumbup

Mike - I used the instructions (which include pictures thank heavens!) That the kit comes with. I was quite nervous about doing it as car electrics are a complete mystery to me but I really did find it quite easy and I am sure you will find it easy enough. Basically, if you can wire a plug you should be able to do this. Order the kit and give it a go. The guy that supplies it is called David Beer and he is on PH and you can call him to discuss - he is very helpful.

Cheers

Not sure what age your car is but my last Chimaera was an L reg and that didn't have an immobiliser circuit in the same way that the later cars do! Check out the ignition switch connections before buying the starter motor

IT'S AN EPIDEMIC!

picked my Chimaera last friday, just before a week away, so only drove it home. It had started cold on test and bringing it home, inc a stop for fuel.
But once home "click". All dials suddenly swing around wildly but only a solenoid click. Afte a few embarrasing moments in the street, it fired up and I got it onto the drive.
Going out this morning to check battery and starter lead connections but what is this "Hot Start" kit you all speak of please and what does it do?
I am guessing the prob is either a loose connection or a too hot starter but advice from the collective would be appreciated. Is a heat shield wrap around around the starter or exhaust a reasonable option?
Cheers

The hot starting issue can be one of a number of things.....this is what I can remember, so correct me please chaps if inaccurate:

1. TVR wired the immobiliser relay incorrectly, which puts too much current through it and fries it over time. The problem is exacerbated by heat (see below). Cure is to bypass the starter part of the immobiliser, as you will still have the fuel pump immobiliser. Alternatively you can fit the Modwise kit, which gives the current another relay to play with. But your immobiliser is probably already fried. The Modwise kit gave me an extra 6 months before I took a trip to see Carl Baker for a complete new kit and remote boot release.

2. The wiring from battery to starter is long and inadequate. As you my know, the best/most expensive jump leads are the thickest ones. You may also know that resistance goes up with temperature. Were you listening in your O level physics lessons? So if your battery is a little bushed and everything is hot, there may not be enough juice to start the car.

3. The starter solenoid may be on the way out.

4. The starter ditto.

Sorry. Check with London & Essex. They advertised as for Chims and Griffs. Delivered well packed. I'm happy.

Will it be fine for a 500? I see you have a griff 500 so I'm guessing it must be.
