Just taken delivery of a 4.0SC which I am very pleased with having parted with my Cerb 4.2 before Christmas.

Mechanically she is very good indeed but electrically its needs a bit of work. main problems I have found so far

Rev counter over optimistic on acceleration but more realistic on deceleration, flicks around a bit as well. The seller said it was to do with magna tech leads?

Speedo is pessimistic reads about 10mph lower than it should do

Temperature gauge flicks around all over the place and every so often shows a good reading, but only for a split second. This ones really needs fixing me thinks!

I have also found a fuse holder under the hood with no fuse in it.

Its just to the right of the plenum on the drivers side just back from the air intake

If anybody can give me some pointers on any of the above that would be most appreciated.

Trev.

Welcome, clean car, we need engine pics thumbupbiggrin

That fuse is aftermarket as far as I can see, best option would be to trace the wires and see where they go to give you a better idea. Speedo could be the size of the wheels, what size tyres are on the back? They're normally a few mph out anyway, having the wrong rolling radius on the back can increase the discrepancy. Mine are miles out paperbag

Fuse is definitely aftermarket. You say its been supercharged? Is it running an aftermarket ECU - in which case I suspect this is related.

The tacho gets its signal from coil pulses and any fluctuations will likely be due to radio interference from poorly suppressed ("Race-spec") HT leads.

Thanks guys, I tried a 5amp fuse in the holder to see what difference it made. The car just ran a little lumpier so I might take it out again. Perhaps it a sensor that isn't helping.

The engine was an early TVRPower unit and runs on a fuel regulator rather than an ECU upgrade. The upgrade is around 2.5K so I might consider it when I've saved a few more pennies.

I will do some pics of the engine later in the week as its raining at the mo.smile

Hi, it is not unusual to have a tacho that does not function correctly if you are running an aftermarket ECU. I found that sending my tacho to speedy cables and having the guts swapped out for a stepper motor and a few resistors added afterwards sorted mine.

Regarding the speedo, are your wheel diameters standard? If the answer is yes perhaps worth checking the gap between the speedo sensor and the half shaft wheel it counts the teeth on....

Oddly enough my water temp gauge has been reading nothing or the correct temperature today, strange.

It been a few week since I have been able to do or go anywhere with the new Chim, so I think this weekend looks good for a run and a few picks.

Car been sat in the garage and low and behold I'm locked out! Dead battery I suspect. Being such a new boy can anybody PM me with how to get in?
Mine is the old Chim with large locks not the under mirror switches

Thanks

I had oil pressure gauge issues a few weeks ago - only had pressure when braking. Terminal on the sender was loose.
Could the water temp one be a similar issue?
HT leads a known issue. I have pale blue Lumenition leads. No issues with the tachometer.
I agree with the previous poster re the speedo and the sensor wheel.

Turns out my dodgy temp gauge and my tacho that read, "all over the place" was a dodgy rectifier in the alternator causing an output of nearly 20 volts!

It also caused the battery to discharge when parked up.

Arh thats interesting, sounds like it could be the reason for all my gauge problems. My fuel gauge also show empty light when its full up and then flashes on and off at different fuel levels.

How easy is it to change the rectifier? Do I have to remove the alternator form the car or can it be done in situ?

I took my alternator to a man who fixes them.

Alternatively, just fit an exchange or new alternator.

Oh thats a pity I was hopping I could get into the unit on the car as its all looking rather nice and I don't want to disturb really.
