Water in the boot

Another possibility is the seal around the filler cap. If the sealant is going water can get in there and down the outside of the filler.

Most likely culprit is the rubber boot seal itself. Get into the boot with a torch and get someone to hose it down. Just dont light a match when your in there

Also, if you have the early model with the backlit number plate, the water can get in behind there and run through the lamp fittings. Another entry point it the rear light cluster covers.
