I need an early GKN driveshaft, @478mm o/a dimension, @460mm o/a over cv's (41mm wide units) end to end. Anyone got one spare or know where to buy from?

I bought a spare driveshaft assembly from a breakers but it is 12mm shorter and so probably suitable for a later car with BTR diff? (dont know why the later shafts are shorter as the diffs appear very similar dimension?)

Despite someone telling me that the shafts are both suitable, i disagree. Having checked the working range yesterday I believe the shorter shaft could likely fail due to being beyond its working limit (depending on how far the suspension is allowed to move and where the top (camber?) bolt is set in the slot).

Any thoughts please? Thanks, phil.

The GKN shafts being longer I am told work with the BTR diff, its the shorter later shafts that dont work with the early gkn diff IMHO ?? Unless there is some other difference i havent noticed yet, like in the hub carrier design or something?

All i can reason is that if the shaft is too long it can bottom out inside the hub and diff output flange, if the shaft is too short you risk the balls popping out of the bearing !!eek

Hi Mac,

Sorry, prob too late for you been a bit tied up everything I own being broken, but the Mrs went out on the piss and left be babysitting so had some quality time in the garage.

I also found my digital callipers so got some more accurate measurements and put them in a pretty picture.

So to put this thread to bed....

Is the circlip spacing correct on this drawing as my CV joints are 41mm wide so expecting the circlip grooves to be similar?

That is deffo incorrect sorry all.

I have the shaft on by bench at home will check. As per Mac's comments I don't suggest anyone uses my diagram without measuring up their own.
