Hi,

I have an issue with the blowers. I noticed that one of the wires (Yellow) going into the dash switch was burnt out so I replaced the connector. Its not made any difference though..

I presume I am best to put a meter across the connections and check that I have voltage - any other pointers?

If you mean the heater fan, then the common fault is an overload on one of the terminals in the big plastic connector attached to the heater control box, which you will find under the centre of the dash top, ie behind the heater controls, (about the size of an over-sized fag packet and black). The fix is to bypass the terminal by soldering a wire directly into the PCB inside the box. IT was my first ever soldering job, so i was very proud of it ....... after I had taken the box apart to remove the first piece of solder, which i had dropped into the box and onto the circuit board... nuts

Thanks for all the pointers.

Found the box that was suggested. All looks OK. Terminals are clean.

I have 12v on the green wires and when I short with one of the other terminals nothing happens. I would expect that shorting would bring them on. 3 different points will different resistance for speeds?

Any idea where I go next?

The usual failure point is e connecting block at the fan control unit under the dash. If you are sure you have correctly repaired your burnt out connection and the fuse is ok then the next likely failure is the motor itself. Unfortunately it is a pain to get to but you can find the power feed to it quite easily. Look in the passenger footwell, on the left hand side, just in front of the door you should find a two pin connector (square and about an inch across) it is fed by a green and a yellow wire. This is the supply to the fan. Try putting 12v across this (check which is earth). If fan runs you know problem is upstream with your controller or something near by.

Also make sure that the ribbon connector from the switch to the control box is around the right way (only one works)

In most cases, the 2 big black capacitors in the heater control unit go bang, which results in an overload that melts the connector and in soma cases the wiring loom. In extreme cases it might even lead to a fire.
If the connector hasn't melted yet, open the heater control unit and replace (that means soldering) the capacitors.
Had the same problem last year on my 99 Chim 450 and my father had the same situation in his Griff SE 2 years ago.

Well, with the damp weather I have been forced to stop putting off sorting this. Yesterday, I did as suggested. I checked out the black box - all good. Noticed that when 'switched on' that the wires to the switch heat up - resistance somewhere.

I then connected the battery direct to the plug in the footwell as suggested and I just get a slight knocking noise. I presume that the fan has siezed.

I couldn't work out where the hell the fan is. Descriptions from the bible suggest that there should be an inspection hatch in front of the passenger wheel? I couldn't find it. Can anyone provide an X marks the spot photo?

It also says that access to it is a complete bh... I presume I am not going to be able to simply give it a quick shot of WD40 and spin it by hand?

mine stopped working recently.
the motor had seized up.
peeled carpet back in the footwell and got access to the wires going directly to the motor. Ran a direct feed from the battery straight to the motor and after a couple of attempts it started shipping again.
It only works on full speed now but does work

I tapped the live wire off it for about 3 or 4 minutes....

I obviously identified the earth but perhaps I should have tried an alternative live...will give that another go tomorrow. I presume that the 3 live feeds equate to the speed settings

Mines an earlier car and only had two wires for the motor, the switch didn't have a control box, just the 3 positions which then feed to a resistor I think. I've just remembered mine was blowing fuses when turning the switch to fully on. Can you get any lubricant spray up there? Might be worth a shot. I'm not sure about the wiring for the 3 wire version sorry

Hi Brett,

I cannot find where the fan is to try squirting oil in. Can you tell me where it is accessible?

Cheers

Passenger footwell, mounted on a panel that's riveted and silicone sealed in place. Bit awkward to remove...
I'll try and find a pic

Here you can see the panel on the lefthand side. I had to remove the fusebox to get it out

Brilliant!

Makes perfect sense now....

Just a thought....if mine is jammed, whats the chances of being able to give it a nudge using a coat hanger down the vent?

Pretty slim, as it's partially enclosed; it may also be quite corroded...
