I had a cheap, copy Land Rover stepper motor fitted to mine which gave idle speeds all over the place when cold. If your idle is fine when the engine is warm, then you may have a cheaper stepper motor that doesn't respond quickly enough to the ECU. Not sure you can tell by just looking at them.
I searched here and found pics of the process for cleaning the stepper, the one in the article looked a lot beefier than the one fitted in mine. The idle is erratic regardless of temp.

OP, great looking car mate..... can't be too many others in your neck of the woods....

I think it was here, in an old post some one said there's about 50 TVR'S total in the country. Don't know how true it is. Tonight I took the better half for a spin to the local shopping centre, was surrounded by the shopping trolley guys who had no idea what it was. Funny thing, I passed another green one a few K's from where I live about 3 weeks ago. Other than I haven't seen one in the flesh in years.

If your car is a long term keeper and you have it converted to Megasquirt, Emerald or similar, this will entirely cure the problem as well as bringing you well into the 21st century.
It's a keeper for sure, I've had HSV's mapped so further down the track I'll get this one sorted too.

You have a number of things going on ,its a combination of the plenum design ,cam spec and the ECU 14cux , There are only a couple of people who can do anything with this ECU .

Read this Blitz explains why you have shunting .

I would buy the ACT induction kit, it may help . HC stands for high lift cam not high compression .

Welcome to the fold! Nice car, it looks like a 95/96 model, maybe registered in 99?

I remember reading somewhere that even the 2000 > Malaysian factory ones had those Fiesta rear lights, and presumably that one is from there?

Looks like a '96 / '97 crossover model. Facelift front grill and sloping rear number plate recess but still has door buttons in the rear wings. Not 100% sure because they're obscured but it also seems to have the pre-facelift dashboard buttons to the right of the stereo.

It doesn't appear to have the slots low down on the front for an oil cooler which I thought was an indication of a Malaysia build. (Mine is 2000 reg and has them)

Chilli's car is R reg, which makes it late 97 or early 98. It has the newer front, but the Uncle Fester rear lights. Not sure if he has door or wing mirror buttons - perhaps he can enlighten us? Anyhoo, TVR phased the upgrades, depending on what was in the parts bin that week. My late 99 car, FWIW, does have the oil cooler slots at the front offside low down.

The malaysian cars seem to have all sorts of differences from UK spec cars - presumably a large batch of parts was sent out at the start of production and used until exhausted?

Yep, later front splitter, door buttons under the wing mirrors, bigger lipped boot, flat rear plate (not recessed/sloping)... Uncle Fester rear lights??

First registered on 01/01/98, pre-delivery checks same day by Fernhurst Motor Co.. Currently valued at £29,500...........

Yup - rear lights by Henry Ford's Uncle Fester (or off a Fiesta for the hard of hearing - or are they Vauxhall? I dunno confused )

I'd call them Griff rear lights, but I value your friendship. getmecoat

Thanks.
Nope it's a much sought after coveted, Malaysian Royal factory 1999 model... (would put smiley face here but haven't worked out how to do it yet) from what I've read from here and elsewhere the Malaysian version (under 50 made) used new and old gear not in sync with UK spec cars.

Rob, top edge of the box into which you are typing says "Formatting help", "Smilies",Rules of posting", "Upload an image (beta)"

Having left your cursor where you want the smiley, click on "Smilies" and a new window opens
Scroll down to the smiley you want, click on the image, and it will insert the smiley where you left your cursor.

Images - if you want to upload a photo, leave your cursor where you want it, click on "Upload an image (beta)" and a new window opens.
Select the image you want on your computer , then click "upload" and it will upload. It will fail if the file size is over 2Mb.
If you want to upload a second image, close the Uploading window, re-open it and go through the same process again.

Formatting help shows you how to make text bold. italic or whatever

Apart from the wheels the car looks identical to mine and mine is also sold as a '99. I think all the Japan/Australian and New Zealand cars would have come from Malaysia wouldn't they? Won't the chassis number give the year for sure?

Can't see from the photos, oil cooler fitted?

Build plate says 99. It has a number of holes where something was fitted in the lower intake on the inner lip far side.

Didnt cure my HC shunting at low revs, but it never hunted on idle unless it hadnt been used for the winter, a quick blast and all sorted..
