I had a metallic "ping - clang" last weekend - it sounded a lot to me like a nut or plot extracting itself from duties.

I noticed today that under hard throttle in 1st and 2nd, the gear lever pushes right, and it's more difficult to find 3rd unless being gentle. I also noticed a big "clunk" from the front (the whole car shuddered and the bonnet wobbled) when going I to 2nd (suffice to say this was the one and only time it was given any beans today..!)

Had a quick look at the engine mounts and couldn't see anything untoward. Until I can get it in some ramps - gearbox or diff mount lost a bolt?

I had a wheel weight fall off. Sounded like something a lot larger. So from your description it sounds like a mounting bolt of some sort.

Time for a TVR expert with a hydraulic lift?

Well nothing obvious has dropped off but I was correct about the symptoms - the engine and gbox are indeed rotating - the clunk was the manifold hitting the chassis as it seems the NS engine mount rubber has cracked. Time for new ones then!

I was delighted to see the price - a set of mounts for my civic engine conversion ten years ago cost me £350, so £25 is highly reasonable!
