Whatever, That noise shouldn't be there, so don't run it! You may have debris running around.
Take off the rocker covers and the sump [easiest and takes no time] to see if anything obvious such as bit's in oil or pads missing.
Don't run and rev'.

Broken rocker pad/s are much noisier IMO but def worth checking, like mentioned already don't just press on using.

As far as I'm aware it's the original cam, it's on 63k 1998. Performance is solid too

From the engine bay -- I seem to remember mart who serviced my car talking about a spring, could this be valve spring issues? As you can probably gather I'm not too up with this engine business!!

Think you are being a bit premature in ordering parts based on a odd sound. Which spring have you ordered, perhaps your engine was built with single spring or double springs. IMO you should get the spanners out and pull the rocker covers and rocker shafts off and have a good eyeball at all the components. Probably not take more than 1hr and very easy for the home mechanic - just be careful once the covers are removed you don't drop anything into the engine and you mark everything so that it goes back in the same way. Plenty of info available, possibly need to hire or buy a torque wrench to reassemble as its an aluminium head and don't want to get carried away over-tightening anything. The only tricky thing is pulling the rocker shafts apart, as they require very careful assembly and easy to get wrong, but this will only be required if a rocker needs replacing and at least you will know where the problem is.
