Well if the filter gets blocked and you have a cheap nasty one fitted then it could be the end of your engine. .
I think if there's enough of whatever to block your filter it's the end of your engine anyway!!!!The other purpose of a by-pass valve is to open, if needed, when the oil is cold and too "thick" for enough to flow through the filter.
Can't go wrong with genuine Land Rover...imho.

If you want the best filter you need to find one that replaces the ancient method of filtration through wood cellulose (paper), with the infinitely superior modern fiberglass media.
Oil filter materials have changed a lot over the years also, early designs used steel wool (like our engine breather), or wire meshes (like our oil pickup).
Later filter designs used cotton or other woven fabrics like linen, but when disposable filters became popular in the 1960's paper was used, its important to understand paper was mainly chosen to minimize production costs. Paper is a perfectly acceptable filtration media for your coffee machine but the truth is these days there are far more effective medias out there to filter your engine oil.
In the last few years synthetic media oil filters have started to be introduced where special man made fibers are utilised, these days better quality oil filters use a synthetic media not paper (typically fiberglass).
If you want a fiberglass filter for your Rover V8 you can get one from v8 Filters.
The advantages are proven by Cummins who developed and exclusively use these fiberglass filters on their heavy service diesel truck engines where long service life and the ability to effectively filter dirty combustion commercial diesel engines is required, all of which presents a big challenge for any oil filter.
Cummins recommend 20,000 mile filter change intervals, the filter from V8 filters is an extremely high quality item closely related to the Cummins FleetGuard.... read "it is a Cunnins FleetGuard" , so its hardly even challenged in our cars. You could probably get three oil changes out of one before replacing it and it would still be filtering better than a brand new paper element oil filter on day one.
Here are just some of the proven advantages of using this fiberglass media filter over paper:

Here are just some of the proven advantages of using this fiberglass media filter over paper:
- Greater Filtration Capacity (its a lot bigger but does still fit a Chinmaera, just)
- Reduces oil temps (mostly because of its capacity)
- Traps up to 5 times more contaminants
- Lower Oil Flow Resistance
- Improves Filtered Oil Flow by up to 80% @ 30°F (-1°C)
- Traps particles that are up to 4 times smaller(10 microns vs. 40 microns)
- Far longer service life (up to three times longer)
- Much better anti drain & bypass valve designs & quality
- Actually works out cheaper (replace it every two oil changes)
