Hi there,
I have just spent £200 turning the standard alloys from this:

To this:

Which is effectively a black metallic with a little fleck in it.

I've been told I could swap these for a set of Estorils painted any colour I wish for £650 - so in effect £850 more than the standard silver wheels. Sounds a bit steep to me but what do you think?

Many thanks.

I was initially liking the definitive nature of your answer... are you saying it's not a good price or it's the colour thing that's an issue?

I have been thinking for a few months too do this to mine.

Then someone suggested maybe the plastidip approach but reading up about it trying to do in cold weather can effect the coating, so now left thinking of taking the plunge of powder coating.

Estorils do make a nice upgrade to the 400-450 but it's quite a hefty price to pay.Would like to see a full side on picture of your car,but from what I see it looks nice and would save the money.

You see many with yellow cars doing what you have done, and it's always down to personal taste but I think it works well. Mine is Starmist blue and have only seen a few doing it which makes me think it doesn't work so well. To my short memory I can't recall seeing any in the flesh on my colour.

Anyway... It gets the thumbs up from me and I would leave as it is and save your money, but if your wallet is overflowing and you want them Go Spendbiggrin

I had my spiders powdered coat black for £190. 2 years on still look great. But its a big fork out for different alloys in black fleck. As last post said how much money do you want to spend on p and j.

Thank you very much for the responses so far. I got the originals painted because I think the silver looks a bit plain against the yellow paint and dark interior. I do wonder if dark Estorils are kind of pointless because they would be less noticeable than standard silver and so my investment isn't so noticeable...

I quite like the standard ones now they've been painted and so would only bother swapping them if people thought it was too good a deal to miss out on.

Estorils have been fetching a high premium for quite awhile now and £850 is not out of order,in my eyes it's not a bargain, just the going rate.

What surprises me is how easy you are to come by them as their a pretty rare find these days (Hence the high premium)

Jason, IMHO the dark colours, like yours, look better with the silver wheels. I know others won't agree. RS Diamond Cuts will look like this and seem to be slightly cheaper than Estorils. Better looking too - but I'm biased. smile

Hello Peter,
I Like the look of those, not far off the look of Estorils.

Are those 16" front 17" rear? If so means new tyres all round.

This enclosed picture I spotted up for sale several weeks ago is what got me thinking. Something I've noticed since joining PH is that It's almost impossible for all to agree on a particular subject.. Other than the TVR badge which every model makes you smile(And tears for a large number)

My theory and man maths tells me it makes a change from the norm at inexpensive costs scratchchin I like the look of it,and that's what matters is it not smile

Sorry for distracting from your inquiry YellowPeril.

Yep, sorry for hijack. They are indeed 16" & 17" so new tyres would be required.

They do look good in the advert pic so may well suit your car. Gloss? Easier to keep clean than mat. You're also dead right that it's all down to the owner's individual opinion. Variety is what keeps it interesting. smile

If anyone's unsure about a colourchange from original alloy the Plastidip route is well worth a try before you go for a permanent change. For £20 (two cans) all 4 wheels can be sprayed, and not just in black.I did mine 18 months ago in black and have recently removed it as easily as it went on.

To me, black wheels seem to disappear. Gunmetal/anthracite and shadow crome works way better, IMO. I refurbish wheels for a living so I do see alot... though I know its a taste thing smile

Jamie-Terry,

Thanks for posting those,I have to say I'm swaying more and more to giving it ago.(Is that the Mat finish)

I notice your both at TiTT so gives a good chance to see them in the flesh before I go ahead.

As for the plastidip I viewed loads on youtube and only came across one failed attempt and from the comments it was a possibility it was due to the outside temp causing it to bubble.

Three degrees in the Midlands today so not sure I want to risk it. Am I right in thinking if you powder coat them then the process can be reversed if you think you made the wrong decision and get them back to the original?.

YellowPeril the picture Mart63 posted tells you all you need to know.

Plastidip has to be worth a go? At £20 you can afford to screw it up lol

This, as powder coat is more permanant (and durable) and expensive compared to Plastidip, you could try a few until you find the colour for you then get them powder coated that colour.
There are a few changes to the car now since the last time we were at the tunnels. Wheels, Lupo's and seats so you are welcome to have a look smile
