modified the KA UJ today to accept a 10mm bolt, I was not happy that the bolt did not contact the splined shaft or the Scooby pinion, the 8mm holes were opened up to 10mm also moved hole centreline toward the shaft, so now the shaft contacts the spline stopping any movement, see pic

Hi SteveSPG
You mention copper washers to seal pinion pipe fitting, can you explain, I can see I need to relieve/ remove thread but unsure about copper washers, prefer not to spray power steering fluid everywhere??
Cheers
Steve
you have power steering fittings. i found they didnt work,

i used a std m16 to an 6 adaptor, and machined the end of the m16 part to a flat, removing a couple of threads also, and used a copper crush washer to seal.

Do you have the type and dimensions of the required hoses by any chance Peter?

I need to start making a shopping list for the conversion from non PAS.

Cheers
once you've got the an fittings in, the hoses can be made up anywhere

Ok ordered 1 off 16mm 1.5 to an 6 adapter for tvr pump, the same for low pressure on rack, and a 14mm 1.5 an6 for the high pressure into rack, so I remove material from front of fitting until the copper crimp washers tighten, is this the same for the tvr pump, also what do you mean crimp washer, are they similar to a new sump plug washer, or just a plain washer, sorry for all the questions, but getting close to finishing now, so like a kid at Christmas, smile

its been a while since i did this, i can't remember exactly, but a std plain copper washer will be fine, no need to use a true crush washer. just make sure the centre hole is not restrictive. just to clarify, the washer goes in the hole, not on the outside of the housing. so the washer is crushed by the end of the adaptor,

i found that the std power steering adaptors tended to have the o ring too close to centre, so didnt seal properly in the scooby rack housing

when you machine the lower threads off the adaptor to prevent the threads galling, you only have to take 1.5mm of thread off, then machine a small flat onto the front of the adaptor. don't take too much off or you'll run out of thread and the "nut" part of the adaptor will bottom out on the outer housing. you'll be left with a 1 mm or so face which contacts the copper washer (don't take these measurements as firm, but gives you an idea)

i never had any leaks. but you do need to make sure the machined face is square. so it'll need doing in a lathe

Am I being a numpty?

If you have hoses made to suit the rack and pump there's no bother, surely?

Pete, I machined the adaptors for you so that you could get the hoses made anywhere - and to the dimensions needed dependant on where you mounted the pump.

its the adaptors that need a bit of fettling

How close are you to finishing the conversion Steve? Will you be listing everything you've bought to complete the task?
Would be fantastic if you did. I'm sure many people would be grateful for a 'how to' description, me included!
What has been the hardest part of it?

If the fitting has been shortened I'd have thought the seal washer would go here?

That would seal against a cast section of the pinion. Likely to leak

Ordered another UJ from car builders solutions, this one differs from the one I purchased on ebay, as the M8 hole/Bolt engages with the 9/16 spline cut out, the original one did not until i opened it up to 10mm. the pinion end still had to be moved/opened up to M10, also found that by opening up from M8 to M10 the Nyloc nut gets very close to the chassis when rotating, so i have ordered a Titanium GR5 Nyloc nut and Bolt (35mm long), which has a smaller bolt head and nut (tensile and shear strength between an 8.8 and 10.9 steel bolt). Regarding adapters, i now have quite a collection, but hopefully have sourced the correct ones from Pirtek M16 1.5 491615/791615 aluminium or steel, and 14mm 1.5 491415/791415, so 2 off 16mm and 1 off 14mm ordered, fingers crossed that they fit.
