Need a silencer

when I got my Chimp it had straight through pipes, which are great but a little too noisy for me. I have to wear earplugs when going on a long run Plus

Of course I don't have a silencer box to put back on, as there wasn't one to begin with, and since 2nd hand genuine boxes are rare I was thinking of going aftermarket.

Anything to avoid or to look at.....?

Thanks Chuff. Saw your thread which gave me the idea of aftermarket silencer as you showed the dimensions.

Matching length of box to diameter of tubes isn't easy and haven't found a match, hence the shorter box linked above.

You could always replace the straight pipe with cherry bomb style silencers. A couple of these would do the job and sound the business.

Good idea, I also want to use flexi hoses rather then welding, in case I miss the noise

Didn't get time to get the calipers on them but it seems slightly larger OD, i'll take some pics and sizes and get back

No worries. This is the diameter of the main pipe if that helps:

The two exhaust outlets from the rear of the standard silencer each have a 51mm ID and a 54mm OD pipe.

I have a similar issue with my Griff. I bought it with precats taken out, main cat in place and sleeved silencer. Not so fond of the sound, a bit tractor like in low revs for my taste. This season I will be running the engine fully decatted, and with only a sleeved silencer it will be too loud for my taste.

So I've been looking around for a proper replacement silencer since a stock TVR piece will be hard to track down (and get delivered here to Sweden...) I have considered the cherry bomb option, but the sound will be far too loud and metallic for me, at least from what I've heard in several youtube clips. Don't like that metallic and popping noise, I prefer a deep and warm tone.

So what about the Magnaflow, Flowmaster etc options on the market, has anyone tried? The fitting part with welding and bending doesn't worry me much, it's the exhaust note that does. I'd rather not spend a day or so under the car just to find out that one particular silencer was too loud after all...

Flowmaster's are quite harsh and aggressive sounding. I had them on a Camaro many years ago. Sounded great on full throttle, and surprisingly little resonance at speed (well with a Chevy V8 anyway). Not sure how they would sound on a Chim, as the chambers are designed for specific engines and resonance output.

If you click on the series silencer, then the part number, each one has a video attached with sound and engineering vids.

Magnaflow may sound better as more traditional exhaust design like the Chim.

Anyone thought of a full twin pipe exhaust setup with X-over pipe? rather than a merged system that splits again before the silencer?

These guys in St Albans, re-standardized my exhaust, cutting out the straight through pipes in the silencer, replacing with perforated and packing with wadding, £120 charged.

Just re-sleeve it with a bit of perf. If you take your silencer out, you'll be able to see how it was sleeved (either top cut off the silencer or the end cut off. If you can't see the welding on the top, then you know it is the end!). Both methods are discussed in this thread, with dimensions etc. You can do most of the work yourself with a disc and grinder. Then simply pop it down to your local fabricator to get it welded (unless you can do it yourself). The whole thing cost me about £40 inluding the materials.

Well, in my case the only reasonable option is to build the system myself. With a factory made silencer that is... I will continue look around for a suitable aftermarket part and if it is of interest I will post my results here.

Still... any suggestions and tips are very welcome!

getting close to sorting my exhaust after getting sidetracked with chassis refurb.

still not sure how 2 cherry bombs would fit in the red circle as the left side of red circle has a clearance of only 1" between the tubes. You'd think they'd touch.

Is it possible to put the silencers in the blue circle but won't be protected by the exhaust plate.

I think you could get two 4x12" stainless silencers in there. It may be worth measuing the distance between the two exhausts at various points to get a better understanding of how far down they could be mounted within the confines of the exhaust plate. Have a look at the ACT web site and see how they've done theirs, it would be very similar.

This is one converted . The fabricator made the two silencers up . It was still to noisy for me with the de cat Y piece so reverted bact to a standard exhaust . With the standard Y piece it was awesome ,very raspy but not to loud .
