Evening all

I'm thinking of getting a Chimera, but after some advice.

There seems to be a lot of Cat Cs about, mostly from the same people on eBay/PH, already with the repairs done and "just" need paint to finish off, has anyone looked at one? are they OK or badly repaired? Do you think it'll affect future values?

I had a look for one briefly last year and where one was worth 7K last year it seems to be 9K this year for something similar.
Where's the best place to look apart from eBay/PH? There doesn't appear to be anything for sale on the TVR car club site.

I'm not too bothered if it needs work and outriggers sorting, I can easily do all that myself. So if anyone knows of anything please let me know.

Thanks for any help smile

I guess it all boils down to what sort of car your after and in what budget?
A damaged/repaired car is always going to be worth less than a straight car but if you're after something a little 'different' it could be a good/cheaper starting point.
Going along to your local TVRCC regional meeting is always a good start.

I bought a cat D car which looked fine at first. Later I did some body repair on her and discovered the shoddy work that had been done in the past. A cat C is more serious damage and I would never touch that unless I knew exactly who did the rebuild and what was damaged.

You may find something on Carandclassic as their adverts are free. I just filtered a Chimaera up to £10k in the UK and there are 14 results, half of which are the Northumberland salvage place. There are some VERY mixed reviews of this dealer on here (no personal experience so no comment from me) but anyone buying a Cat C is well advised to take an expert with them to examine the repairs. If you just want a cheap project then maybe worth a look to give an idea as photos can be very deceptive.

Many of the damaged/repaired cars come from Northumberland I have noticed. For most of us this is a long way away and a long repeated trip if you find you have problems with the car.
This is a company that specialises in buying cars that have been written off by insurers, often unnecessarily, and then doing some basic repairs and putting them up for sale.
No disrespect to them, but as the cars have been in an accident and still need the work completing, and are stated as such, I would get the car checked by a TVR specialist before buying.
Also be aware that a full respray starts at about £3,500, plus any extra post-crash fibreglassing, so unless you have those skills yourself you need to budget in those costs, plus any other mechanical/cosmetic work that is needed.

So if you are just joe public, like me, you might be better served by buying a car off another PHer that has been well cared for and comes with a fat file of service history and invoices. All IMHO of course.

Thanks for the replies guys some interesting thoughts.

I'm happy to do any mechanical/FG repairs needed, and don't mind paying for a respire, I know a decent body place, but there's no point buying a 6K car spending 4K fixing it/spraying it and then because it being Cat D/C it still being only worth 8 or 9K.
I'd happily take something on that wasn't recorded but the history will ruin it, think I'll keep looking for a non-damaged car.

Just need to keep reading up and understand all the differences so I know which year is best to go for etc..

Thanks smile

You could do worse than go along to the next local TVRCC meet and chat to those present. I see you are Midlands based. There are West and East groups. East meets at the pub in Langar the first Sunday (i think) each month, don't know about West, but hopefully Jason will read this.....?

Evening guys,

Thanks for the replies, funnily enough I've had 3 emails just from this thread now, none quite what I'm after though.

Jas - I'll try to get down to that and say hello, might even bring down my current toy if the weather is OK.

Raceboy,

I seem to remember following your car some years ago and used it to justify to my missus why we needed a Chim in our (my) lives!! From what I can remember-:
I bought my Chim in Nov 2009 and attended Chatsworth in the April of that year for an info gathering session. As we left we followed you out in our 3.2 Audi and just about kept up. Followed you for a while as you burbled through a few towns and then as you headed east we went west. Must have done the trick as we still have the Chim in the garage, although we must put some more mileage on it this year.
