They are worth about 10p now .. just looking through autotrader last night and you can get a 06 for £1500.

They must all need engine rebuilds.
Not so sure about that - just thirst (mine averaged 17mpg over 76,000 miles) and high tax bracket ('06's are £500 per year ish) ...

If you take out the engine yourself with kind help from friends, and pluck it down to bare block, how much is a complete liner change to tophats? 5k?

I've secured some - erm - 'funding' for May ... not really happy about it but it is the way that it is.

Lloyds gave me a cost of £3.5k to pull the old engine apart, have the block sent away and top hat liners fitted, have it rebuilt, heads refurbed on the way (they need the oil seals replaced at least as she smokes quite badly under load) and all refitted ... also to their credit they also gave me another alternative which comes out about a grand cheaper but not really to my liking.

I *COULD* (just) have got them to do the rebuild but it would have completely wiped out what's left of my savings and I'm not prepared to leave myself without some sort of contingency - so the plan for now is to get her back home (obviously they don't want a car just sat there waiting for four months) and stored off road (tax is due this month), try to brew up a sensible list of things to do while she's having major surgery and run around in a Renault Megane for now. (After using the old girl pretty much every day for five years this is going to be one hell of a change!)

I think that then I'll look at trying to source a 4.6 (up from 4.0) short block from V8D (or similar) in May - their 'performance' 4.6 short block is about £2,200 and my cam is almost new so throw that in, whack on my existing heads and use that ... I could go for their long block version of that with standard heads but mine (they're dual valve-spring 'HC' heads) appear to have been heavily (although clumsily) ported but with standard valves (obviously we've been able to check now) so are probably still worth using.

At the same time I still have a new gearbox and starter motor and a secondhand dif to fit so I suppose it would be sensible to do those at the same time then I have effectively a new drivetrain ...

V8tuner also have some nice short blocks ready to go, they have a fully balanced hi comp 4.8 for 3k. Give your heads to Paul Goodenough yourself and he might port and rebuild them with big valves for half the cost of BV heads....

I seriously doubt that you need further 'notes' on how to drink wine.

My own gut (and you know that's a big gut) won't let me do a half arsed job on it though so I have feelers out with a few of the usual rebuilders to see what can be had for not-too-silly money.

She arrived home last night on the back of a loader looking very sad ... Lloyds have been great as usual - didn't even charge me for their time and simply asked that when I'm in the position to do the work I keep them in mind.

Just got to put plans together now as to what to do and where...

Sorry to hear this. I guess we all know it can happen to us at some point. Great service by Lloyds, you don't often hear a story like that these days.

Do these 4.6's all have liner problems? Even it it did then a total of £1100 for a top hatted 4.6 block would still be an excellent starting point. Polish the crank, fresh shells. Then spend the next chunk of the budget on the heads. Maybe send them to Dave Knight. A ported inlet and trumpet base, 72mm plenum and a nice cam should easily see over 300 bhp. Do it right with an aftermarket ECU and could have 330+ with excellent road manners and MPG.

330 bhp on a 4.6 that would be doing very well.

Its the most common rangie engine problem. Either the block cracks behind the liner and leaks coolant, or the liner slips. If you want the 300 hp+ 4.6 you need new hicomp/4.0 pistons with eyebrows in them, will set you back about 400 quid extra... plus the full balancing afterwards.
