Do these 4.6's all have liner problems? Even it it did then a total of £1100 for a top hatted 4.6 block would still be an excellent starting point. Polish the crank, fresh shells. Then spend the next chunk of the budget on the heads. Maybe send them to Dave Knight. A ported inlet and trumpet base, 72mm plenum and a nice cam should easily see over 300 bhp. Do it right with an aftermarket ECU and could have 330+ with excellent road manners and MPG.
I thought I read somewhere that Landrover colour coded the blocks as an indication of the thickness of the block wall behind the liners?

Just found it:

My guess is maybe 5K final selling price with the right buyers bidding.

Went for £2,200 in the end ...

I've been offered a never-used rebuilt 5.0 bottom end for £2k and £800 to rebuild it with my existing heads / cam etc and refit it so thinking seriously about that ...

Does that include porting and bigger valves on your heads? If it does, its a good deal smile

Depending on the 5.0 bottom end that is, some people have witnessed some terrible rebuilds! Who rebuilt it?

It's hard to understand how you can build a bottom end wrong!
Am I stating g the obvious but isn't the 5 L a bit fragile anyway?

It's easy enough if you don't know what your doing, you can build an engine or put one together but you can guess which one will be reliable.

So it's more a case of bad workmanship
I remember moons ago a machine shop getting so fed up with rebuilds going wrong and peeps saying it was his machining that he started building them himself,
He's a very successful chap and his engines are renowned ,,,
Not a Tvr man but is well known for Rangie V8's
Mmmm I thought people who build engines have brains but there's always the pretenders I suppose.

you have to double check all tolerances, use correct torque in the correct order, some bolts can not be reused. Different lubricants and sealants for different parts. Its laberous work, if one takes shortcuts, it can mean disaster.

Yes Ole but then you'd think an engine builder knows that already,,, I do and I'm quite dosile!
It's such a stressful and expensive business having a re build you don't wanna hear things like that do you,

Bass fiend, Richard Ward of Rugby
Wards engineering
He's built tonnes of RV8's and I'm sure he's been featured in LandRover mags for years,, this guy has built thousands of different engines,, everything you can think of,,
Does all the machining himself and when you meet him it's obvious he has a huge passion for engineering,,, he's been in business for 30 odd years,,, I was new to Tvr so I bottled it and went with the usual suspects but Richard could produce the same thing for half the price,,,
I'm sure you've been given loads of contacts as we all like to keep a Tvr man with his Tvr but Richard knows his stuff and the idea of re ground cranks with old thrust bearings etc would make him cringe,,

Dunno if this helps but I do know he's half the price!
Goodluck with it. Alun
