Hello to all,

As title of post, how easy is it (or not) to replace the engine mounts at home? or is this a Garage job?

I have axle stands, jacks etc, tools. Also, is it a 'one man' job?

Nearside one has failed, resulting torque at full throttle caused the engine to 'twist' (I could feel the gear lever moving hard to the right in my hand!) causing the tensioner and belt to eat its way through the swirl pot and dump all my coolant in about 2 seconds! luckily I stopped and switched off before any damage.....

Cheers.

Ian.

I've done it this year DIY. I wouldn't say I'm particularly good in the garage but I do have a decent ratchet spanner set, and a proper socket set, and an angle grinder, and a big ol' worklamp.

If you don't want to jack the engine up by the sump/underside you'd need an engine hoist. It won't fall through because the headers would rest on the chassis so risk is limited in that regard....

Also - I'd cut the 2 protruding bolts from the new mounts down a bit - they're pretty long and make it more difficult than it needs to be (obviously make sure you've got some thread all the way through at the very least!

I did it in 2-3 hours one evening single handed - I took the bonnet off so I could get in the front easy, and you need to have the car up in the air on jack stands and the front wheels off. I put the wheels under the chassis in case it fell off the stands it wouldn't flatten me. Then I used a bit of wood on a jack to lift the engine and manipulate it into the mounts. Loosen both, then change one at a time. Couple of ratchet straps can help with positioning if you're on your own.

Jack up the car and remove the wheels at the front;
Place a block of wood on on a scissor jack and gently jack the engine from under the front pulley to take the weight of the engine/ pressure off the mounts;
Remove the mounts and the brackets securing the mounts on each side;
Refit new mounts to brackets and rebolt on engine. Gently push/ pull the engine from side to side to facilitate clearance whilst fitting;
Gently adjust height, checking for clearance between the chassis rails and manifolds;
Adjust and tighten;

It can take a bit of adjustment to get both brackets on. Good luck!

I was told that my original mounts had a small split. I bought new ones and asked for them to be installed during the next service. I was told split originals would still be better than new replacements as the new ones are of crap quality and will split anyway??
