Good tip Trev4, thanks. I knew I should have read the manual.

Can I ask what the DAB reception's like using that aerial? Any drop outs in valleys etc yet? The only (and I mean the ONLY) plus point of the diesel VW I'm using is the DAB radio - it's brilliant - sticking one in the TVR is something I've been thinking about but it was the aerial and chances of good reception that had me stumped smile

£19 antenna sounds ideal if it works. For the limited amount of time I'll want this the posh set ups aren't worth the costs, I'll stick with recordings of one format or another.

Anyone used a splitter with the original antenna effectively? Is the antenna amplified on a 99 car?

I've not used it extensively but reception did brake up while travelling through the lake district at the weekend. I'm hoping this is just down to the fact that it had slipped down onto the floor and was sat behind the passenger seat and I'm guessing the lake district may not have the best radio reception anyhow. My daily certainly doesn't get FM in parts either.

Holy thread resurrection Batman!!

Just fitted a Sony head unit I bought off a local yoof for £25. CDX-G3100UV, if you want the detail. Well, Mat Smith fitted it for me.
New speakers fitted by him too, as my rear ones didn't work and the front ones, well........ one fell out and trashed itself against the gearbox housing on a sharp bend on a track day, the other was removed to fix electric mirror connection problems, and was trashed by my lard-arsed border collie sitting on it.

CD sound is awesome on the new speakers, and now i have downloaded the manual from t'internet, I can do the other set up bits, like toning down Blackpool illuminations to a reasonable level and colour.

Radio reception is crap except for BBC Radio Nottingham.....where the content is crap instead.
My car has the FM aerial around the windscreen somewhere, I believe. There is a lot of hiss and crackle, and it loses the signal with regulous monotonatiny.

Any thoughts? I do like to listen to the radio on long journeys, especially for traffic news.

Or should I just give up, and download the Tune In phone app mentioned on another thread? I never go anywhere without my phone, as I need it to get back through the gate to the driveway when i get home. The Sony unit has a USB socket into which i can plug the phone via a short lightening connector (iPhone 6), just not sure if it charges the phone as well as receiving input? Guess I had better read the manual again.

The Radio app is the easiest and cheapest method., a Bluetooth radio would have been better but no big problem using a cable.
I’ve just put one of these in my daily mainly to be able to connect via Bluetooth, the dab is a bonus and works well on stronger stations.
Stick on aerial you get used to but not sure how effective it would be in a Tvr.

My radio reception was virtually zero. I'm convinced the aerial is missing or not connected in my Chimaera. So I used one of the following.

I'm not recommending this specific seller, I got mine even cheaper from China. I just left it inside the dash and I now have several FM channels. Not all that brilliant but better than nothing!

Plug into fag lighter, tune into an empty wavelength, Bluetooth to phone and Bobs a goodun.

I use it mostly for Spotify and can transfer it from car to car.

Excellent quality sound. Flick tracks by pressing button and answer phone.

Thanks guys, great input, even the negative.
So I sat in the car this afternoon and cleaned the seats and dash. Long overdue.
Then I set about setting up the Sony radio.
Sorted out Blackpool illuminations - I have dimmed the display and made it plain white.

Set a few other features, then tried to tune the radio. Got excited when I found seven stations with a clear signal. Saved them all and started the engine. Drove out onto the road, and the only acceptable signal was Radio 1......nuff said, I have just passed statutory retirement age and wear earplugs when my daughter insists on having Radio 1 on in the car. So that’s a no-go.

I thought about all your comments and decided to start free.....so went back indoors and downloaded Radioplayer on my iPad. It then popped up by magic on my iPhone, so I saved Radio 2, 4 and Classic FM as my favourites and went out to the car. Plugged the phone into the Sony head unit with my standard iPhone cable. Turned the ignition on and started the engine. Turned the Sony on and selected USB input. Classic FM rang out, as loud as my ABBA CD (I said I was beyond redemption,) and crystal clear. Noted I had 4G and that the phone was charging too.

Took the car for a drive. No sign of any signal drop out. Big smile on my face.

So, given that I always have my phone with me when I am in the car (my electric gate is opened by phoning it), and that I want it to be charging when I am using the app, I have my solution, thank you. I will report back if I find any problems. I now need a nice short silver braided lightning cable, and a phone holder......Ebay here I come.
