Hi.
Whilst not directly related to Chimaeras, I just wondered what your opinions were on squealing brakes.
I have just fitted a complete set of Mintex brake pads and discs to an S type Jaguar. From the outset they have squealed terribly under moderate braking pressure. The pads were coated in Copaslip and have since been removed and recoated but are still the same.
I would normally have fitted OE pads but have always thought Mintex a good brand however various sources now say otherwise. The noise is so bad now that on recommendation I have purchased a set of front and rear pads made by Apec and am due to change these to hopefully effect a cure!
The worrying thing is, I have a full set of Mintex pads and discs waiting to go on the Chimaera.....
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Regards Chris.

I would say I fit Mintex pads and discs every other day on euro boxes and don't have any problems, this is probably over at least the last 10 years however I also fit Pagid,Textar,Delphi and genuine and the same applies the only brand I have had issues with squeal is when trying to do cheapies on older cars and I refuse to fit Eicher anymore (a Euro Car Parts stocked brand) the discs seem fine however but the pads will drive you nuts eek Are you sure you mounted the discs on spotlessly clean hub faces i.e no corrosion dirt crud etc? have you checked for disc run-out the biggest cause of squeal IMO it may be worth trying this also copper slip is not much use for brake pad assembly scratchchin worth a try http://www.camskill.co.uk/m17b0s1209p5833/Mintex_B...

We're the pads a good fit in the calipers and not rattling around?

I've got the MIntex discs and pads in my Chimaera and they don't squeal if that puts your mind at rest.

Thanks fro the replies.
I'm always careful to ensure the mating surfaces are clean when I put discs on and have used copaslip for years.
Never known it before but maybe it's me? I'll probably change the pads anyway and see if there is a difference just to satisfy my curiosity.
I too have used Mintex before without any problems.
Regards Chris.

Quite often is down to the high metallic content of the friction material. Which compound are you using? Does the noise only happen at light -moderate pressures?

If it is 1144 Mintex pads, I had the same issues!

Went to Pagid pads, no noise.

Hello again!
The pads are for normal road use, nothing fancy. The noise is, as you say, under light to moderate braking, it disappeares if you stand on the pedal. Copaslip was applied to all of the metal surfaces that move, obviously not to the friction surface. I have done this for years and never had a problem before.
As an aside, the pads have been on for about 400 miles and seem to be VERY dusty, the wheels were almost black after 20 miles!
I will let you know the outcome of the pad change....
Regards Chris.

Pop the discs off and rotate them 90 degrees (72 if on five studs) - might work, might not but you've got a harmonic vibration where all the bits in contact are singing and responding to each other. You just need to change the frequency to disrupt the harmonic. A few really hard stops might do it too

Mercedes had real issues with pad squeal some years ago. Their fix was to use Mintex product Ceratec which they designed for their pads.

Forget Copperslip, no manufacturer to my knowledge uses any form of grease when they build the cars so why does the aftermarket feel the need to? All the dealerships I have worked in do not use any grease or lubricant.
If the pads have a rubberised coating where the caliper or piston touch then no form of grease is to be used.
If the original pads had chamfered edges then the replacements must have the same to stop the build up of dust at the leading edge of the friction material. This build up forces dust under the pad and can result in squeal. You can use a hand file and put a 45 degree edge to prevent this.

Agree with the comment above about the cheap Eicher pads and have found Pagid to be the best all round.

Hi, just an update to my original post.
I have changed the Mintex pads and fitted Apec ones. A brand I have not used before but have good reviews.
As I normally do, the backs were coated in Copaslip.
The result? Totally silent braking, not even a squeak!!! Obviously the pads I had fitted were the cause of the noise. All very strange as like many of you I've not had problems with Mintex products before.
The braking too seems better from the start and as a bonus they are not as "dusty" either. A result all round!
As an aside, I have also changed the front anti roll bar bushes and despite the car's low mileage it is transformed over the bumps in our roads. The bushes were genuine and not cheap but worth every penny. Now back to the TVR.....
Regards Chris.
