I have been looking at the Clio 172/182s on PH Classifieds. Lot of fun car for little money.
Don't do it! I bought a 172 Cup. Hated it. Dreadful driving position, and bolted together like a cheap French hatchback, because, well, that's what it is. Engine was awful, loud and rough and it literally fell to pieces. When I came to sell it, it was easier to describe what remaining things worked than what didn't.
Strange isn't it. It seems that everything works perfectly on this old Skoda……….Also, brilliant driving position for me.
Yeah, they're good cars. I had the Mk2 Octavia VRS, brilliant car. As is my girlfriend's Golf. I'm sure the Mk1 is just as good.

I honestly couldn't believe how bad the Clio was. Things literally fell off it. It was a poor example I admit, but I could find another thing which had broken on it each time I drove it! Either trim, bodywork, mechanical, or electrical problems.

It wasn't even that fun to drive, but maybe that's because the TVR has spoilt me!

Thread resurrection, it popped up on a search I was doing smile

Got rid of my shed/runabout/shopping trolley/leave it anywhere Golf early this year, and need a replacement before winter sets in this year. Beastie and Moneypenny will probably both be off the road (unusual) this winter as I'm looking to bring both up to mint condition...

So, not only am I hooked on my next practical 'shed', I've now become obsessed with owning one of these, and actually went to view one locally this morning... Volvo 850 T5 estate........ retro cool or what biggrin I'm totally hooked....

Chilli smile

I had one of these back in 2004. Quick, but no cigar, torque steer was, errrr, interesting when coming off a roundabout. I was advised by a Volvo specialist not to keep it beyond 160,000 miles because the auto boxes tended to need replacing, but I never knew if this was true or not. On the plus side, I love big estate cars because they are just so adaptable. My shed collection features a Saab 9-5 turbo and a Volvo XC90 T6. 170k and 140k respectively.
Go for it Chilli. What’s to lose?

Volvo 850 T5 estatesmilesmilesmile. I was recently in California and the chap showing me various farms and processing plants drove me around in a 850 T5, it was a real step back in terms of dash/ergonomics, but boy did it look and sound cool.....went surprisingly well in today's monster Derve turbo culture. Do it.

Oh and yes to the MX5 as well.....good choice.

my daily drive is a 2015 SLK 250 CDi AMG spec. comfortable, quiet, frugal, quick enough in the real world and dirt cheap to buy 2 years old. in the first 2-3 years they depreciate like a falling stone - great for those of us who don't buy new cars. not tried it on a track yet but the flappy paddle gears might make it fun. You will have to retrain as a hairdresser through.....

More than toying with the idea of a 968 sport atm.

If I was going for a cheap, fast, reliable car, I’d go for a remapped Octy vRS. 220bhp from a mk1 or about 250 from a mk2.
Less common than a golf.

Those T5 tanks are brilliant. Plod used them for long enough. Tough as old boots and most suitable for the, ahem, more mature driver wearing tweed and a flat cap. Go for it Richard wink

Thanks A, apparently they also shred the front tyres in no time.... one I'm looking at has less than 70k on the clock.... might take that with a pinch though hehe

I'm totally in to retro cool, and I'm even thinking of buying a pair of RayBan Aviators. Again. And maybe some Levi's scratchchin There's just just something about these big Volvo estates.... smile

Thanks Iain smile

This one has a dark metallic red exterior and a grey leather interior... not sat in it yet but the interior looks like it might have been stolen from a gentlemen's club in Knightsbridge biggrin

Oh, and apparently a simple chip can dramatically improve petrol consumption smile

and give over 300bhp woohoo

No real problem on tyres, Richard. My Saab (similar power output, similar weight, front wheel drive), did well over 20,000 miles on the front pair of a set of Uniroyal Rainsport 3s, 30,000 on the rears. I don’t remember the big Vulva going through them any faster....

Cheap as chips. Anonymous. Sweet handling. Nice soundtrack. I've got an estate and they swallow everything (self levelling rear) and still truck on. Nice spec for the time; heated/cooled Recaros etc. As the Sköda, used extensively by the rozzers, for the reasons above.

Cosworth powered Lotus 7 was my first car in 1969, 6 months later I was rebuilding it and working for Caterham wink
