Paul,
Got to be worth looking in the space covered by the B-post trim (behind door lock). All the wiring for the rear lights/fuel level sender etc. run through here. Note colour of wires at solenoid and compare with what you see in the space.

Lift trim out and you'll see several multi-pin connectors...this will be on both pass and drivers sides. Bet the solenoid is on one of these. Split the connector(s), clean the pins and spray with WD-40 or similar...
Might as well give the same treatment to all the connectors you can see??

Had an issue with mine not working. Check you have a voltage to the connector [hidden under carpet directly behind number plate] I kept fiddling with mine and eventually took it out and connected wires direct, been good since.

Have you checked for voltage at the release button?

Sounds like the ignition feed to the switch is missing.
Its not clear from the diagrams where this is fed from but you could do as i have done and wire it to a permanent 12 volt source anyway as its very easy.
Up under the dash to the right of the switch is a white multiplug, one of the wries in it should be red in colour. It may be tucked under the carpet.
This is the permanent 12 volt feed to the cigarette lighter, it can be checked with a multimeter.
Basically splice into this and replace the ignition fed wire on the switch with the new one and your release then works without having to turn the ignition on.
If you dont want to do this you can just use it to test the circuit to tell you if it is the 12 volt feed that is missing.
