What does the 5l flywheel weigh ?

I thought the a light fly wheel is difficult at low speeds .

Didnt engineer1949 have problems with a race flywheel .
The answers to all your questions are contained within this very five page thread Daz, you've just got to read it mate rolleyes

More on lightened flywheels here.....

And these are the facts wink

Rover SD1 32lbs
Standard cast 400/450 Chimaera 28lbs
V8 Developments lightened standard cast 23lbs
Bespoke TVR cast 5.0 litre 20lbs
My final TTV chro/mo steel 18.74Lbs
TTV stock RV8 light weight chro/mo steel 14.55Lbs
TTV RV8 race spec chro/mo steel 7.5Lbs

For safety V8 Developments will not go any lighter than 22lbs on a standard cast flywheel, this is however already a huge improvement on the 28lb millstone you got in all Chimaeras except of course the five litre cars, the 5.0 ran a bespoke cast 20lbs flywheel.
The TTV RV8 race spec chro/mo steel 7.5Lbs flywheel fitted by engineer1949 is made for a race clutch, its also half the weight of TTVs very lightest road spec flywheel, as such this combination is highly unlikely to be suitable for a road car, it's no surprise to me he quickly removed it.

My 4.0HC runs a bespoke TTV chro/mo steel 18.74lb flywheel mated to an AP five litre clutch fitted by Mat Smith, at the same time he machined down my release bearing carrier as TVR hadn't allowed sufficient free play from new which caused all sorts of issues over the years. The 5.0 AP clutch with the correct free play is a joy to use and combined with my TTV flywheel works extremely well, it's light years better than the standard RV8 clutch and massively heavy 28lb flywheel combo the car came with from new, especially as TVR hadn't allowed sufficient free play/clearance so the clutch dragged when hot.

When combined with a V8 Development Stealth cam the engine character is transformed, flywheel lightening on this engine fitted in such a light car is a no brainer and I may well go even lighter still, I'm extremely tempted to get TTV to spin down my flywheel to 14.55lbs. I also have a first refusal agreement with Matthew Poxon on his ACT twin plenum as he's currently in the process of going to throttle bodies with his new engine, the theory is shaving a further 4.2lbs off my TTV flywheel and fitting Mathew's hand me down ACT twin plenum should take my throttle response to the next level without breaking the bank cloud9

My Brembo four pot caliper and big disc conversion, Mk4 Tuscan 'S' spec Bilstens, Stealth cam, TTV flywheel and Canems Dual Fuel engine management system have already transformed my Chimaera into quite the B road weapon, all this in a super smooth driving yet old school analogue shouty V8 sports car that delivers the petrol cost equivalent of 50mpg just goes to prove you can definitely have your cake and eat it lick

And people still think LPG is only for taxis and fork lift trucks rofl

Has anyone fitted the Racing Green /Parts for TVRs lightweight flywheel. The centre hole on mine is 0.25mm too small so wont go all the way home onto the crank.
Cheers Colin

Is this not just the TTV one resold by them?

Possibly but its doesn`t fit. Racing Green are doing their very best to sort it for me before the weekend as I`d planned putting the engine back in over the bank holiday. Great communication and service from them so far.

If the RG flywheel is the same as the TTV item, I found it is a very tight fit onto the crank spigot. It’s much tighter for instance than my original TVR/Rover flywheel.

I got mine direct from TTV, and at first I thought the centre hole was too small but after some measurements realised it was ok, it would go on a small way then seemed to jam, I carefully aligned the flywheel to the crank and pushed on as far as poss by hand then using the old bolts I pulled it onto the crank progressively tightening the bolts. It didn’t take much force at all once it was going and slid up tight to the crank quite easily. It may not have been necessary but I then changed the old bolts for new ones.

If you’ve actually measured a .25 mm difference and can’t get it started on the spigot then my experience probably won’t help!

My experience same as above, the interference is intentional by the way winkonce I had confirmed all OK I just lubed both crank spigot and FW and assembled , 0.25 interference is too tight however , maybe its the crankshaft spigots that differ scratchchin

Thanks for reply’s, it slips over the first step on the crank but the second machined step in the crank it won’t go over. I can’t get the bolt into the threads to wind it in either. It also won’t fit on 2 other spare used cranks I have. RG also said their other new one won’t fit on a crank they have. So I’m waiting for them to send me another. I can’t stress how much though that Racing Green have been super helpful in trying to sort it out.

The fit is definitely 'interference' aka 'tight'... I spent quite some time tightening opposing flywheel bolts bit by bit until it went all the way smile

Oh, and on mine the bolt holes for the clutch pressure plate were tapped M8 rather than the corresponding imperial size (5/16 IIRC)... which for me as a continental didn't cause me too much of a problem, anyway. wink

Ah ! I didn`t get that far to check if the clutch bolts fitted. Thanks I will check. Weekend plans are knackered now, just received a text message saying delivery next Wednesday from TTV Racing.
