Chassis clean up.

Excellent, what was the approx cost?
All in including the bushes / new bolts / nuts / discs and pads it came in around £400. To be honest most of it is just time and effort. I used the bilt hamber 2 pack epoxy that was recommended to me as they use it on the oil rigs in the North Sea! The trick is to only try and paint a small area at a time and to take your time as the mastic does go sticky quite quickly and hence it's difficult to get the smooth finish.
Sure Zed4 will agree it's quite therapeutic as long as you're not on a deadline and the results are really satisfying.
I've read somewhere on PH that somebody uses aerosol oven cleaner to clean the chassis. Didn't nominate which brand - Mr. Sheen, Oven Pride?? Photos of before and after looked very good, though.
I guess all the proprietary brands use a form of caustic in the formulation - - would that neutralise the acidic salts from the road??
You'd definitely have to use PPE for the eyes and hands whilst applying it.

Really admire you guys who have the skill and patience to do this sort of thing yourself. My car is at Taylor TVR having the same treatment; fully body off, new outriggers, clean and repaint chassis (very good condition), new radiator, new steering rack, new cooling hoses and a few other bits and pieces recommended after the body was off.
I'll post up some pictures when I get it back as Dan is keeping a diary of progress in pictorial form

You won't be disappointed Ian. Had the same thing done by the same man 18 months ago. Great job, very pleased.
Hello Peter, I remember you talking about how pleased you were with Dan's work and along with a couple of other good recommendations he just seemed the obvious choice. I caused a bit of confusion when I turned up as Dan saw the car and thought you had arrived a week early for something he was scheduled to do for you, bit of a double take moment GasDoc said:

To take off the body, fully clean the chassis and make a few minor repairs, replace both the outriggers and repaint everything my bill is only just over £4K. It is quite a sum but the work won't need doing again, the agreed value of the car will be adjusted up for insurance purposes and it makes the car very attractive if I ever decide to sell it.Obviously each car is going to be different and in my case when Dan looked at my front and rear suspension he told me that under the waxoyl they were almost perfect so need no attention. My main chassis is strong and only needs some very minor repairs before it is repainted.

I agree, by far the easiest way to remove Waxoil is to pay some poor other barstward to do it for you.I'll post up some pictures when I get it back as Dan is keeping a diary of progress in pictorial form
FYI automatic transmission fluid is just about the best cleaning agent in the world, 5lt of cheap ATF is £20 and 5lt of pure Xylene is £15.
Mix the two 50:50 in a large plant sprayer to make 10 litres of the best Waxoil release agent on the planet!
- Spray the chassis
- Leave for a few hours
- Apply a second coat just before getting your local steam cleaning company to blast it all off
Talk to your local coach hire company or commercial truck repair workshop to see where they have their steam cleaning done, there is usually a steam cleaning outfit at the dirty end of most trading estates hidden behind a big ugly building.
You may struggle to get a Chimaera on their ramps, but once the car is in the air nothing beats a commercial steam cleaning lance.
You should look to pay about £25 for a very comprehensive 15 minute session which is going to be more than enough on a little Chimaera, remember these guys are used to doing big plant & trucks.
Make it clear where you want them to spray with the lance and ask them to do it carefully in short bursts, the guys that do this type of job aren't usually the most careful so make sure you're keeping an eye on what they're doing

Hahaha, yes they're becoming scarily clone like, aren't they! When do you get the car back Ian? It does take a while to complete, although the final 'hours bill' for the work was very reasonable imho. pb450 said:
