struggling to crack it open in half.

Taken the long screws out but when I push the threaded shaft it does separate at the 2 halves but worryingly starts to bend some of permanent wire terminals near the brushes. Seems like the bottom wound part won't budge.

Serp engine.

Any ideas?

The armature inside an alternator is heavily magnetised. It may not be as 'free' as you think.

Pretty sure you have to de-solder the field wires from the rectifier before you can get it apart. not a very repair friendly alternator when compared to some.

Thanks NZfan, I agree with you too I already bent them when tapping threaded shaft, thinking it was moving it was just field wires collapsing. In which case I can't powder coat it....!
