There are a load of scams around.

Looking on eBay the last couple of weeks when sourcing a none tiv I found at least 6. They are always about 20% under book and always zero sales before.

I emailed one beauty for a laugh. Car was down in Wales at a transport holding company. Send your bank details, they will deliver wink narf narf!

They often have a hotmail address on the face of the advert

To be slightly fair for a moment, it's a 4 litre and has 91000 miles on the clock. It may just be that the price quoted was what the owner thinks is a fair market price for a relatively high mileage car. I know I will struggle if I ever try to sell mine, despite having spent well over £10,000 on it in the last three years, purely because of the mileage on the clock.

I saw a much lower mileage example sold by a TVRCC member last year for less than twice the price in that ad for exactly that reason - the owner had owned every TVR including a Tuscan and a Sagaris and that was his opinion of the true value of the car. It was so immaculate you could have dined off the engine bay or chassis.

It's possible he put the engine capacity (4000cc) in the price field?

+1...

One of the directors of the company I work for asked me last week where my car was - I told him it was still being worked on.

He asked me how much I'd spent on it 'this time' and coughed when I told him ... then he asked what I thought I'd spent on it overall and when I told him he looked at me like I was nuts.

"So what does a really good one like yours go for?" he then asked ...

I pointed out that mine would still look like a bag-of-sh*te when I get it back and would probably only be worth 5 or 6k even though I've spent 8k so far this time alone...

The look he gave me really was quite indescribable... hehe

Did you ask your boss how much he'd spent on his golfing/football/flying/mistress hobby and how much he'd get back for it in 5 years time when he comes to sell them. 😂

Roy is one of our directors and not really my boss but he's a lovely guy - he's actually quite "simple" in his outlook - he doesn't have a flash car or anything like that and he understands that owning the Tiv for me is like owning one of our HiFi's ... a bit quirky and more "hands on" than most people might want to ever put up with but that it's all about the enjoyment that you get from it... smile

These adverts are often worth following up.
I recently "stole" a Vixen that was advertised by someone who had no idea about the car,it had been his late brothers.
It was all over here and Facebook as a scam. Ok I was only a few miles away but you could bag a bargain!

Thought I would contact the buyer to see what response I got. Based on the response, I believe this is a scam and therefore advise any prospective buyers to be on their guard. Surely this is the sort of thing the PH Mods and Haymarket should be keeping an eye on.

Hi,

First of all I want to thank you for your interest for my car. I've almost reached an agreement with a potential buyer. Unfortunately, it looks like there are some problems and he doesn't have all the money to pay, for the moment. It is in extremely good condition,100% HPI Clear, full service history. Currently I am on a business trip to France and will have to stay here for about 6 months (this is why I am selling the car for a low price and I am looking for a fast sale to finance the french project ). I left the car in F&J Transport custody and they will handle the sale for me. The V5 log book is already signed on my behalf, the car will come with 2 keys, all service records and previous MOT's. F&J Transport will deliver the car directly to your home address and I will pay all delivery expenses.
In order to go ahead with this transaction just contact F&J Transport ( www.fj-transport.co.uk ) department that handles the sale directly at: info@fj-transport.co.uk and they will assist you with any questions you might have regarding the transaction.
When contacting the F&J Transport please specify my name ( Suzan Watson ) and the car make and model.
Thank you,
Suzan

Ha ha, exactly the same text as a Toureg I enquiries about.

You can spot them a mile away and the zero behind the name is a give away!

So what exactly is the scam? Is the transport company an innocent party? Do they need to be told a scammer is using their details?

This is a well known scam, or at least I thought it was.

I suspect that either FJ-Transport is an innocent party in this, or is a fake website set up for the scam. More likely to be the former as the 'seller' will want you to be able to verify that FJ Transport is a genuine and trusted company.

I also suspect that if we search hard enough we could find that car has genuinely been for sale recently and the advert has been copied by the scammer.

The way the scam works is to hook a potential buyer in to thinking they are getting a good deal, one that they need to rush to complete due to other interest in the car.

As the 'seller' is abroad they will either ask that you pay online via bank transfer or if they are clever via a payment portal that appears (but will be a fake page) to be from the transport company. They will also generate some fake emails and phone calls that give you the confidence that the car will be delivered or can be collected from the transport company. Once they have your cash or card details and you have paid for the fake car, you are likely to find out that FJ Transport know nothing about the car or the transaction and the seller has long since vanished.

I work in IT. You do not need too many skills to be able to send fake emails, even ones that appears to come from a genuine email address, or set up fake websites using similar domain names or links with alternative website addresses behind them.

All I am saying is eyes wide open, and if it appears too good to be true, it probably is.

Must be a PH'er based in Forfar.

Can't be many people who would actually buy a car "sight unseen", so asking to inspect the car is not an unreasonable request.

Alarm bells sounding loud and clear when there are no phone contacts on the company website though.....
