Hi All,

currently removing exhaust and have removed clamp, bolt to block, six bolts to tray and removed anti roll bar from chassis plates so all set to go. Stumped on the final hurdle in that the exhaust is well and truly lodged in the Y piece sleeve. I've given a gentle tap and sprayed some WD 40 around it but before I go mad with the lump hammer any advice on where to whack ? exhaust plate ? or smack end of external sleeve with a screwdriver to drive it off ?

Any previous experiences or practices gratefully received. I don't want smack the cr*p out of it and damage anything.

Cheers all

Jeremy

WD40 and a wiggle, bugger off for a cuppa or something to let it do it's stuff. Rotating rather than thumping usually shifts it IME.

That would suggest to me that the exhaust has not been off for a long time. The 12k service includes greasing of the propshaft UJs. The exhast has to come off to do that so I suggest your propshaft UJs may be in desperate need of regreasing

...and it'll be a good opportunity to do it

Put the jack under the silencer box and lower it down a couple of inches and then holding the tail pipes try twisting the whole exhaust.

^^^^^ this,, by all means tap around the joint to loosen a little but I found getting hold of the tail pipes and wiggling eventually cracks the seal and it should slide off smile

Had no bother 12 months ago. But did mine again a few weeks ago and this time had the same issue. With all bolts, clamp and hanger removed. Use penetrating oil (not WD40), have a coffee, then get down low, with your chest against the back of the car (to avoid pulling it off the axle stands) grab hold each tail pipe, then twist, pull and wiggle it up and down.
Should then come off. Mine did after a struggle. But I am getting on a bit!yes

There is another bolt near the y piece, look behind the front passenger side wheel. There is a bracket on the exhaust that bolts to the engine block.

Easy to miss, but he said he had removed the bolt to the block. I changed mine myself up on a ramp (car, not me) and it was ok with a good wiggle. But mine had been regularly removed.

So if it's maybe been on the car some time a good soak will help loosen the crud as others have pointed out. thumbup

Do you remember when I did that, got a grinder and some nice rust removing discs, it still looks good,, couple or three hours Richard, easy peasy smile
Richard we have played with Rich's bespoke pipes this week, new tray, bolts and fitted rear anti roll bar with some lovely drop links from Racetech,, O/S exhaust pipe rubbing on the roll bar,, bit of fettle and a crow bar later,, sorted,, we think!
Fitted bonet, on/off on/ off but she's opening and closing nicely now,, nearly there,,, : thumbup:

This formula for rust busting penetrating fluid is reported to be the Bees Knees by the way.

Source: Interweb

50% ATF + 50% Acetone together and shaken before application either by brush or in an old atomizer spray that the Acetone can’t eat.

Anybody on here tried it?

cool

cheers all, thanks for the advice. Exhaust is now off. It most certainly is a case of kneeling behind the car and wiggle, wiggle, wiggle , wiggle !! wink

For future ref to people researching topic, next time I will try and remove the rear anti roll bar completely as even when dropped, the exhaust bottom plate can still catch and it needs jacking to initially get over this.

Thanks Again

When you put the exhaust back I would smother the Y-piece joint and pipe in Coppaslip.

I saw someone on one of the better American car shows put some secret sauce down one of the bores to free some seizing up, it looked like Atf with something else added but he wouldn't tell!

Apparently, citric acid, diluted with water, eats away the rust...Soak parts for a few days...
