Matthew in awe of your setup. Ive PM'd you also.

Regarding Harrys LT as i think thats what ill be purchasing. Which version of the app have you gone for? There are 3 in the iOS app store "Rookie"£6.99 "petrolhead"£14.99 and "GP"£20.99

but it doesn't state full capabilities of them.

Im not so fussed about running 2 cams I would like to let my GoPro do the footage while allow my phone to just do the maps and G-sensing. Then be able to overlay that to the video (as you have done but no 2nd vid needed necessarilly).

Let me know what you recommend mate. Thanks in advance

It is all about the conference lift for an amateur like me. smile I did struggle with Combe a bit to be honest a bit to technical for me and there is very little in the way of run off.

Harry's Lap timer running on my smartphone to capture the telemetry data. The internal camera is using the iPhone and the external is a GoPro. You copy the GoPro footage to the phone and overlay the telemetry. It is not the simplest thing to do, I practiced with it on the road for a bit to get the hang of it. It is a ball ache to get a good result but then it is £10 for an app vs £1000 for the equivalent VBox system. GoPro is far better quality than the VBox cameras as well.

There is also an option to use Dashware which is now free (been acquired by GoPro), again using an app on your phone (also free)

This is an example of Dashware...

You need the GP one to drive a Gopro to simplify the synching and therefore overlay.

That's what I was told by Harry anyway, as I originally bought the Petrolhead version and couldn't work out why it wasn't linking directly to the gopro.

got me self an external mic, have drilled a hole in my casing no problem but I was wondering from the peeps who have used the external mic do I need to wrap it or shield it in any way to reduce wind noise. Just my first thought the gopro mic doesn't come with a very long lead.

Yep, you will need to keep it out of the wind as much as possible and use a windjammer.

I use these over covers

ok had a look at them, thanx for the link. couple of questions 1) comes in packs of 30, so I take it they are not reusable 2) do you still have to hide microphone from as much wind exposure as possible.

You can buy one if you wish.

http://cvp.com/index.php?t=product/rycote_065555

Just check they will fit the mic you have, you only need one if you have one mic.

It's the undercover ones you throw away after each use as they are sticky, the over cover ones aren't.

They still will need to be shielded as much as you can, just tucked up next to the number plate etc etc.

In my clip at the beginning of book read, the camera is used inside the car without an external microphone.

You can still hear the engine but obviously not as loud.

For my 1st official track outing I think I'll be doing the Silverstone taster day. I mean I've done a parade lap or 2 but nothing unleashed. I hope I'm not the only one using Harry's Lap timer that then did all the car info/dims etc

I think Silverstone is the only noise test my decatted/sport pipe Cerb will be ok on (locally). Hopefully I will get some standard times in before Dom releases his 4.7ss rebuild wink even though my GoPro is internal I may get an external mic for the hell of it.

It's all gone "Tits Up" for my bargain basement buy camera. The Gopro external mic they sold me don't fit the mic socket on the camera. They looked to see if I could get one from maplins but no go there. No way I can have sound using there water proof case so they have told me they will refund my money and I'm now, three weeks later back at the beginning with no camera. can you credit it laugh

Drilling a hole is exactly what I did. I prefer the angle from on top of the screen so had to have the camera outside. I wrap some electrical tape around the mic connector to make sure its a tight seal and no problems at all so far.

If you go down this route though start off with the smallest drill bit possible. Once you start drilling the plastic of the case heats up very quickly and its very easy to make the hole too large very quickly. Its easily doable but patience and precision is needed.

It now allows me to have the external mic going in any weather with the following result:

Best of luck if you try it smile
same setup, works great 'every time smile

Hey up chaps.

I have been looking at these go pro cameras for my Chimaera and of course there are the cheaper ebay alternatives.

It's an SJ4000 or something, has anyone had any experience with those?

Dunk
no experience with this model. but it does not have a remote control or external mic socket, otherwise the reviews say it is good

Not sure if I'm actually allowed to mention this, apologies if not, but my GoPro funnily enough is now for sale in the classifieds after my earlier contribution to the thread. Advert should hopefully be live tomorrow.

Mods - Sorry again if I can't do this.

Been thinking about a GoPro for ages, but couldn't justify the cost, in my head at least (I know, its not THAT expensive but but when you've spent what i have to be back on the road, I started having a little guilt trip paperbag). anyway, the kids bought me a Gopro Hero 4 Session for my birthday, and i am bowled over with it!
water proof, to 35 feet...just in case i should fall off Anglesea coastal circuit...and anyway, it always rains there smile), bluetooth, wi-fi, built in mic, smart phone remote control, AND...direct control/link with Harry's Laptimer. Looking forward to my first T/D in anger for nearly 6 years this Friday evil

I bought a very nice Hero 4 silver from Kris on this thread, Thank you very much nice bit of kit.

Phazed (Peter) Does yours only record in narrow FOV (field of view) as mine seams to just have the option of wide angle. Just wandering if the 4 black has a choice.

I had a GoPro hero 3 until it got nicked, I've just bought a cheap dash cam which has gps for £50 so I'm going to play with that and see what it's like, although I know it's only got a max clip recording loop of 5 minute and a lock to save clip so we'll see how it performs

No worries thumbup

This is a quick and dirty paste from the GoPro website. There are different FOV's depending on the resolution you use. Also know if you download the official studio software there is a function to remove (or at least reduce) the fish-eye aspect that way as well.

Video Resolution Frames Per Second (fps) NTSC/PAL Field of View (FOV) Screen Resolution
4K 15, 12.5 Ultra Wide 3840x2160
2.7K 30, 25, 24 Ultra Wide, Medium 2704x1520
1440p 48, 30, 25, 24 Ultra Wide 1920x1440
1080p 60, 50, 48, 30, 25, 24 Ultra Wide, Medium, Narrow 1920x1080
1080p SuperView 60, 50, 48, 30, 25, 24 Ultra Wide 1920x1080
960p 100, 60, 50 Ultra Wide 1280x960
720p 120, 60, 50, 30, 25 Ultra Wide, Medium, Narrow 1280x720
720p SuperView 100, 60, 50 Ultra Wide 1280x720
WVGA 240 Ultra Wide 848x480

This is a screen grab I took when on the Col de Bonnette. Settings were 1080p, 60 fps, Ultra Wide, 1920x1080. Even though it looks wide on the camera's rear screen the converted video doesn't look that wide I'd say.

What mount and where was the camera mounted?

It was the official GoPro suction mount on the outside of the screen pretty much where the rear view mirror is. Apparently the mount has been tested up to 150mph, or so they claim. No way on that route was I ever going to get to those speeds haha.

It was/is an amazing drive. Only got caught once behind a slow sight-seeing Seat Ibiza but other than that pretty much no other vehicles of any kind. The car did suffer though with the altitude for the last 25% of the climb. It really felt down on power. Guess a Turbo/SC will be needed for next time...
