Couple of questions, Gopro silver 4. Still trying to get to grips with it.

Is it normal for battery to drain when left in camera switched off ?
How to keep remote syinked to camera once turned off ?
Best way to download files onto lap top as mine does not recognise the storage device.

Cheers for any pointers.

If you use Wi-Fi/Bluetooth switched on while the camera is off it will drain the battery.

If you can tell the Wi-Fi is switched on by the blue flashing light.

I use an iPad as a remote viewing device and i use this to switch the camera on and off direct from the iPad and it still stays connected.

As for downloading to a PC, I leave this to my IT son!

Yes as Peter says if you leave the Wifi on then it drains the battery.

You need to keep the wifi on, I think you press an hold the wifi button to do this. If the go pro has a flashing blue light then this means Wifi is on and you can turn the camera on and off from the remote or phone app. Note that whenever you take the battery out it defaults to off I believe. Also as per above it does drain the battery.

Take the SD card out of the GoPro and put into your computer is the best way.

Regarding battery life looks like you have found out it is quite terrible. I have got around this by buying the battery charger accessory. It comes with an additional battery so I leave one on charge and one in the camera. When the one in the camera is down to about 25% I just swap them over and let the other one charge up.

I used to plug the charger into the ciggy lighter in the car and wedge under the seat. I know have a USB battery charger so I can leave it in the pits charging while I am out trackdaying and swap when needed.

Got a twin battery charger on it's way and an adapter for the flash card bought tonight from tescoe's so down loaded the video's from the racing at the weekend. First impression is the quality is superb and i'm only using 720 medium. Upload to you tube shortly. Thanks chaps for advice again. Only disappointment is the sound and I was using an external mic. will be repositioning for next outing in a couple of weeks. I will needto talk about mounts as I bought a load off flea bay but none were very good ok for a push bike but not much cop for motorsport

Glad you are pleased with the GoPro. Regarding the quality if you get a decent sized SD card you can go 1080p at 60fps which is very good quality. Looking forward to seeing your epic Tuscan racer in action on the video.

Regarding mounting the best you can get are the 3M sticky mounts if you don't mind putting them on your car. I have on at the top of my windscreen and one in the nose of my Griff. Regarding the external mic above the exhaust is normally the best place for sound and it also blocks out most of the wind noise. I did try mic next to the air filter but there was too much wind noise but you do get a nice bit of induction sound.

H Matthew,

Good Morning, I have the sticky mounts and loads of others but I need the mount fixed to the roll cage inside the car as the outside of the car is very prone to bugs , fly etc and the dreaded brake dust. the problem I have is I need a mount that moves in all directions to get the camera facing forward and the right way up, although I think I can turn video file in the edit sweet. External mic was inside car next to the exhaust but I think all the fire protection has robbed sound. next position is next to the 48 dellorto's.

I also have one of these which I have never used myself but used on a friend's car with a roll cage. Having a roll cage is great from a camera point of view as you can get whatever camera angle you want.

Matthew Hi

I have the exact same mount front and rear but I don't have that swivel thingy you have screwed into the base of the clamp mount, any link. The bottom picture sums up my problem nicely how to clamp in that position but have the camera the right way up. Any brain waves. Hope to be at Donnington doing a trackday next week with a past sponsor so will put mic by carbs for you. LOL

This company sell the whole mount with the swivel included, not sure if they sell it separately. I didn't bother with the ball joint instead I used the existing screw mount things that come with the GoPro to adjust the camera position

Yes! in the camera settings there is an option for upside down mounting so it will flips the recording for you. Link below:

Mathhew Hi,

I have set the camera up for upside down filming at Donny on Tuesday thank you for link simples when you know how.

I have wired the external mic up to the back of the banks of carbs but was wondering as sound was so bad last time out do I need to set the camera for the external mic or just plug it in and camera recognises it automatically do you know?

I found a short cut to turn the wireless on and off to save the battery. push the spanner button on the side for 2 second to turn on and 4 seconds to turn off, no matter if camera on or off simples.

PS. What video setting are you at and still have medium view . My setting at the moment is 720/50/medium

Excellent stuff. Looking forward to seeing the video.

Yes it will auto detect the mic, just plug it in. Might be worth testing it before hand if you can to make sure the sound is what you are expecting.

I am using 1080p/60fps/wide. The field of view depends entirely what you are looking to capture, wide suits me as I get the whole windscreen in so have a play with the setting and see what best suits your needs.

Have you guys seen the new cheap GoPro?

Has a waterproof housing built in, microphone works while still being waterproof, auto detects upside down orientation...

Hi,
i have 3 different action cameras and i use them for TVR footage but also on my Quadcopters for aerial filming. One is a Gopro Hero 2, one a Gopro Hero 3+ and the other is a Xiaomi Yi. They are virtually identical in performance, but the Xiaomi Yi is only £55 !! still shoots in full HD and since doing the software upgrade i can now use class 10 cards (instead of class 4) and shoot in 2K at 30fps.
The Xiaomi Yi also has wifi the same as the Gopro, so you can add an app to youre phone so you can change settings but also set up camera position etc by using your phones screen. The best thing though is the waterproof casing uses the same mounts as a Gopro, so you can use all the Gopro accessories on it. For the TVR i have the 150mph rated suction cup and a 3M adhesive mount on the windscreen, to give me different camera angles, and they both work very well, the suction cup being able to mount anywhere on the bodywork, without damaging the paint.
The only downside to the Xiaomi Yi, is the microphone is sensitive to wind noise, but a small piece of thin foam placed over the mic hole solves this. If filming using both cameras i use a external mic hooked into the gopro, which is then mounted just above the rear number plate to give best sound from the exhausts..
I would give the cameras the following marks out of ten:

Gopro Hero 3+ 10/10
Gopro Hero 2 9/10
Xiaomi Yi 9.5/10

Before the software upgrade the Xiaomi Yi had the same performance as the Gopro Hero 2, but since the upgrade it is now performing like the Hero 3+. When you think its only £55 quid it makes it fantastic value for money, so should it get damaged you can just buy another one. You can also buy silicon protective cases the same as the Gopro and it will screw onto a tripod too..
Xiaomi as a company are the Chinese equivalent to Apple in the US, so dont be fooled into thinking its cheap Chinese rubbish..

Hope this helps..

Gopro help again please Mathew,
Just got back from Spa and I had wrapped the mic in quite a lot of foam to shut out wind noise as the mic tries to do it it's self and the result is a quite volume. It worked and now it is much louder on the recording but downside is it has picked up all the rocker and valve noise from top half of engine . I had the mike stuck to the air box in front of the carbs. Back to the drawing board for a mic position just to pick up the carb noise.

I will post a video link once I have sorted out this new problem I need help with. I have camera set at 1080 50fp medium. and filming a 40 minute race it records into one file on camera, then when I down load it, it splits the video into three smaller files, meaning I have to get them back into one file to put onto "you tube". any thoughts as to why it is doing that ? as it makes editing the video, to cut out unwanted bits, a right time consuming, pain in the derriere.
