...to get a Chimaera to the point where a typical spray shop would want it for a decent respray? (Probably not a colour change though.)

How much needs to be removed / stripped out?

How much is a respray likely to cost me?

(God - this is just becoming yet another labour of love project with this car ... maybe I need to find myself a decent woman to waste my time and money on instead!)

I have to say I'm getting increasingly tempted by Steve Edwards latest hard top too and it would seem sensible to do a respray and that at the same time if I'm going to go down that route ...

Something tells me that you and Alexgokartcrasher are having a competition to see who can take the longest to get their car back on the road yes

You can have no idea how much I *NEED* to get the Tiv back on the road - just for my own sanity (although many would say that ship has long since sailed)... frown

it's all in the prepping when it comes to painting,, ok so you can remove a few bits and bobs but then you'll need to trailer the car to the paint shop,, a Tvr friendly painter can do that stuff as its next to no big deal so if the monies available just drop the car and let the experts do it.
It's true to say you get what you pay for with paint,,,try and do it on the cheap and you'll tell.
As your cars going to be rather special mate, Central do a fine job thumbup

Getting hold of a trailer shouldn't be a problem... smile

Just trying to work out what I should be budgeting for a competent respray ... I mean, I don't think she's going to be anything particularly 'special' when she's back up and running to be honest - just hopefully she'll be the way that she should be (apparently the dash is going in at the moment)...

I reckon another couple of grand on a retrim and whatever it costs for a respray should have her to "feeling like new" (as opposed to "better than new") but she has become a bit of a personal quest ...

... nothing that anyone else hasn't done better though!

Alexglassback (and many others) have built far more 'special' beasts...

Dereks devotion to hurling a heavy bucket at the horizon can only be looked upon with admiration (not to mention bemusement)...

Dave's constant quest to get his running better and better on fairyfarts...

ChimV8 building himself up a gorgeous 'standard' car only to sell it on to start working on rescuing another from an untimely demise...

I think they (and others) should be an inspiration to us all.

I cringe when it gets to each winter because it seems inevitable that a couple more will end up in the hands of the butchers and I'm determined that mine won't die (much to my dads dismay - he would love me to drive a 'sensible' car)...

Have you thought of doing the doors opening wider mod? I am getting to the stage where I have to take the roof off to get into the car. If you can find such a mod, do let me know.....

I love this comment Phil???, women have a fantastic way of spending your money without any guilt!!!!

Hope these pictures gives you some inspiration and get stripping you car down, remove as much as you can for ease of spraying and give the painters a better chance of getting it right first time ! I was even allowed to do some spraying !!!smile

Phil, there's loads of birds out there mate but only a few Tvr's, hehe sorry to any ladies reading,

I've had some dark days with my Tvr experience and took it on the chin,, spent to much but learnt,

The problem with these plastic cars is you paint em and it seems to attract, car doors, idiots with bags and stuff,,
Scratches soon appear and then the stone chips etc,,your back to square one ;(

The truth is a good respray will then draw attention to other areas so your then doomed into doing something about it,, hehe

My car was sprayed by Central and they removed the doors boot/bonet, then enclosed the cockpit and engine bay etc before prepping the body,,
There's no question regards the painting, mine was done nearly 4 years ago and other than washing it with a wax shampoo I've never polished it,,, just wipe it dry and bling. wink

Hey - as I've said on here many times ... I took the ex-mrs-bassfiend's statement of "You're never having a TVR while I have a say in it" as her tacit acceptance that there was a choice to be made... hehe

I'm not quite there yet, but with my arthritic right knee I have started noticing that it is much easier to get in with the roof off.......open door, left foot in, slide down the seat back while simultaneously pulling the right foot in. I can almost make it look intentional and graceful. The joys of advancing years. I keep trying to catch up with Chilliwhizz, but he resolutely stays a year older than me. confused

Of course, as soon as we get to Spring and the weather warms up a tad, I will have the roof off 24/7. Just the Leven cover over at night.

Yes, I was thinking that as I wrote it. I never complain (much!) about my aches and pains as they are as nothing compared to my 29 year old daughter's EDS problems, or your Marfan's. It's always blessing counting time in the this house.

Hi Phil

I had my car repainted at the beginning of the year by Matrim in Weston-super-Mare who did a fantastic job.

As part of the project I wanted faired in headlights because the old lights needed work and replaced the mirrors with mk 3 VW units as the old ones had been repaired.

Matrim were very helpful and spent a lot of time discussing what I wanted, one thing we discussed was saving money by me doing the prep work but in the end I let the experts do it because I wanted a satisfaction and no quibble guarantee. Matrim explained to me that the prep is the major part in repainting these cars and its best left to the experts.

In the end I removed door cards, lights and mirrors, cut out the cowls and refitted after painting which saved a bit

Some pics
