We'll,been reading several tyre reviews over the last few weeks in various mags, and surprisingly to me Toyos were in the bottom 3 on on occasions.

Have they gone downhill lately?

What is a good tyre of similar price range?

Anyone used the Hankooks,Nexen or Kumos?

I think it depends on what car they are being tested on and what they were being tested against. The TVR is a very light car compared to most other machinery and many of the competitors don't make their tyres in the sizes needed for our cars.

Personally I've been very happy with the Toyo T1R

Toyo T1-R has a softer side wall than most tyres in the 'fast road' market. We add a couple of psi to overcome that softness, if other car users are failing to do this then that could detract from their experience

it also depends which tyre you use. The R888 is the tyre of choice in the sprint and hill climb scene. they are bloody good. That reminds me must order my new R888R's

I've got a set of T1R's on my car and I'm also happy with them, the softer wall really helps when turning and going over bumps at slowish speeds, more compliant.

Put a set of 888s on the back of the Cerb, but its still off the road with rebuild at the moment. Will be interested to see what its like, reminds me of motorcycle tyres with a grove "when they feel like it" kind of profile. Definitely not a wet tyre!

I currently have T1Rs which still have plenty of tread but are now getting pretty old. I was going to fit the R1Rs, which look like a good compromise between the T1Rs and R888s, but can't find them in the correct sizes for the standard 15" front and 16" rears. Current fitment is 225/50 front and 245/45 rear. So looks like I might have to stick with T1Rs.

There have been having a lot of problems with Toyo Proxes on MGTF's of late.

They were originally manufactured in Japan, but are now made in Malaysia, and the quality of tyre seems to have deteriorated ( Softer tyre walls have been suggested).

TF's are particularly tyre sensitive to tyres, most tyres are ditch finders in the wet, whereas by MGB V8 is fine on any decent tyres.

Looks like I can get R1Rs in 205/50r15 front and 225/50r16 rear, same width as the non PAS tyres, but fronts will be 50 profile instead of 55. a few members on here seem happy with this set-up. Also quite a few seem to prefer the narrower set up even on 5.0l PAS cars.

So need to decide between the wider T1Rs, narrower R1Rs or something else.

Just my thought, I wouldn't be putting 888's just on the back of the cerb or any car come to that. For grip balance. I would suggest you think about putting 888's on the front as well. 888,s in the dry have significant grip above other Toyo tyre.

As above.

I run R1Rs on the road and these really are a good tyre giving significantly more grip then the T1Rs.

Toyos (T1R is now replaced by the Sport iirc) are ultimately a mid range tyre.. So tbh, the fact they are mixing with most of the Conti's etc is decent for the money. They aren't a bad tyre, but they aren't the best.

T1Rs are an older design of tyre, whilst at the time they were pretty good, things have moved on. Look at the Uniroyal Rainsport 3.

Mrs Podie's latest acquisition (Fiesta ST) came with these on the front. Absolute ditch finders with a hint of moisture.

To Angus 337: I once had a Hankook 205/50/15 on the front. Although only a bit smaller in diameter compared to the 55's they look a bit "lost" in the wheelarch. Not obvious at a glance but since you know it does'nt look right the more you look at it, know what I mean. If you want the original set-up take the Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalin RE002, available in 205/55/15 and 225/50/16 for the rears and with the correct speed index. Good tyre and not expensive.

My fronts are coming up for replacement (225/35/18), do I stick with Toyo T1 Sport at £101 (Black Circles) or are Uniroyal Rainsport3 worth the extra £9?

My experiences with Rainsports on a vRS were more then positive.

I could take roundabouts in the rain quicker then when the car was fitted with Falkens in the dry!

Try www.protyre.co.uk

They only keep tyres in stock for 180 days (fresher is better!), decent prices as well!

I think I would go for the Rainsports.. The T1-Sports don't seem to come out great in tests..
