Looking at the loom it might be one of the relays tapping against the positive terminal of the battery???
<nervous twitch>
Make sure the new relays are the correct ones - can get battery drain if you use the wrong ones I think. Temp gauge on mine just shows any old temp it feels like. A long cable tie is good for a misfire from cold - touch the manifolds and check all 8 make the cable tie melt.

That's a cracking idea - I'll give it a go.

I have had very similar issues on mine as well apart from i didnt hear the clicking noise, i eventually tracked the cutting out issue to bent pins on the ECU chip, but i guess thats not common, i do however stil sometimes get the misfire, just enough power to keep moving, for about one minute and then it clears and continues as normal, i would be very interested if you find the issue with yours, i have replaced all the ignition system apart from plugs and extenders as well as the 2 relays

I've changed the relays tonight and swapped the stepper motor for a new one. Seems to fire and idle much better from cold. Still around 1000 rpm but the rev counter is a little random anyway.
Changed both relays and given the wiring a god look over, battery terminals a good clean etc. I also found one of the HT leads wasn't perfect - repaired it but I'll probably get some replacements made up and see how it goes. Hopefully I haven't made it any worse!!

Thought I'd give you all an update.

Driven it all weekend (In the glorious sunshine) and a few miles throughout the last week.

Short trips of less than 1 mile and longer trips of 20 is.

So far, no more cutting out.

Fingers crossed.....

I've been following this and only now it dawns on me, I had an S2,, would cut out violently all of a sudden then fine again,,
I changed everything,, then read about stepper motors,,, replaced it and the sudden loss of power never happened again,,
I bet it's the stepper motor.

Hi to All,
I'm relatively new to Chim ownership having brought a 1999 Chim 500 from Scotland back to my resident Madrid about 18 months ago.
Having recently done a de-Pre Cat to hopefully lower underbonnet temperatures for this climate plus other bits and pieces: recent service, new fuel and air filters, leads, rocker box gaskets, underbody 100 amp fuse, I've got it all back together but have a cut out problem, initially only under hard acceleration but later more frequently...
After checking Lambda sensors, which I'd removed for de catting, were OK, I found that the smaller of the two leads on the positive battery terminal had blown the 100 amp fuse between it and the starter (located in the passenger footwell . After replacing this I now find that sometimes when firing up, the radio comes on simoultaneously (which it didn't do before...)
It seems that when the radio doesn't come on, the problem disappears though the time the radio didn't come on I only had chance to test drive for a couple of minutes before a massive and ongoing deluge.
Has anyone had similar problems? I've been over all the connections I've touched, but can't find what's wrong. I'm assuming it's a bad earth or similar.
Any suggestions would be welcome
