Came home tonight at 8:00pm to find the garage door wide open with the TVR and bike in plain view (rented council garage)

I locked it up thinking the misses must have gone to get something from the car and accidentally left the door open.

I remembered to ask at around 11:00pm and she said she knew nothing about it, so I just walked back round and the door is unlocked again, and noticed the bonnet was popped on the car!

So I called the police on 101 to let them know in case I come out in the morning to an empty garage, and in the mean time have taken as many measures as I can to make the bike and car immobile, and parked the OH's car in front of the garage to block it in.

Don't know how I am ever going to get confidence again though that they won't just go missing one day

Close call but glad no resentful damage was done as they couldn't nick it. At least the end result is a good one.

Hope police will come out and do.forensics but somehow I doubt it. Time to need up the security.

Ok the funnier side they obviously know nothing about tvr's half of us can't start our cars and we own them!

Bit worrying! You've not reported any damage or theft, though, so perhaps (hopefully) someone is just playing a harmless prank.

I'd be looking at changing the locks, installing a PIR-based light or even renting another lockup close by (would only cost about £80 a month) just for peace of mind.

As it's a rented garage what are you allowed to do to make it more secure?

I use one of those security things that bolt to the floor in front of the garage door.

I'd also suggest a couple of decent hasp and staples, one on each side of the garage door. That will make it pretty much impregnable for the petty thief

and that's just the finger count in Norfolk biggrin

Can't see there being any issue upping the security fittings. Just forward all the keys etc... when you return it.

I to rent council garages and have my doubts about at the security of them.

Part of the contract for the garages asked me to list all the items stored in it and the values, I questioned this seen as the contract also states the council have no liability for any loss/damage so why should I give them an inventory?

Apparently they must know in order to decide if it is additional risk..whatever that means when they have no liability.

The cynical side of me suspects that dodgy folk within the council could easily tip people off as to which garages have good stuff in.

Sadly I've also noticed that the garages fitted with additional security like padlocks and door defenders are the most likely to be tampered with. I also try and make sure that when working at the garage and storing stuff I try and leave the heaviest bulkiest items by the door to try and distract would be criminal s

I used to store some motorbikes and a very fast go cart in a council lock up and used a battery powered alarm as some form of deterrent, whenever kids or youths hung around I'd make a point of setting the alarm off,,, as the garage acts as a base bin it was pretty loud and it seemed to work!

As they came once then came back later it's either idiots or someone vaguely determined,,,,
Get security or a different garage, your nerves will appreciate it.

Thanks guys. I rent another near by with the other car in so I might move the the bike there for the time being. The police recommended that I call the council on Monday to find out what extra security measures I am allowed to take.

Maybe a Stanley blade glued to the bonnet release biggrin

^^^^^^ biglaugh that's the way. It'll leave DNA !!!

In moments like these it's probably better to be clinically cold and think straight, it's terrible hearing this and very emotive as I'm sure your feeling,

Put the car on jacks, take a wheel or two off, until you've considered your options , anything but let the fkers get near it!

I red a council garage a few years ago and had 2 additional locks installed. When I stopped renting - I just informed the council and gave them the additional keys. Who ever rented it after me got a more secure garage as a result.

Cost me < £100 at the time for the locksmiths work.
