Stopped because I noticed the water temperature at zero.

Expansion bottle is full, but I don't have tools to undo the nut on top of the swirl pot. Daren't carry on in case it has lost coolant, although there's no evidence of a leak.

RAC on their way, but in the meantime can someone tell me which fuse the dashboard water temperature gauge is on?

Ta!

Another PH thread for the Chimaera says:

Was driving last weekend in the Chimaera (1996 400) in the rain. Turned up the screen demister from 2 to 3... and the dashboard electrics all cut out - the demister, temp gauge, oil pressure, fuel, speedo and rev counter.

Clock stayed on, as did the radio, lights, indicators.

I guess a fuse went, and I've got SH's original bible - is there anything else I should be looking for other than the right fuse - e.g. why it went in the first place?

Thanks for any input...

Neil

ETA: Guddled around in the footwell, and indeed fuse no.14 (15A) is blown, marked in the handbook as heater/instruments.
I can get a replacement, but any ideas as to why it would have blown?

Water temp gauge not separately fused.
Sensor that feeds it is on the front if the engine, somewhere near a water pipe or the pump. It varies
My guess is the wire has fallen off
If the fans are working on this hot day, and you aren't losing water, then this would be my best guess

Wires still look attached at the sensor end, and I've wiggled them with no response. Maybe the sensor has failed.

Just realised I've been looking at the ECU sensor. Can't see the gauge sensor; it's too dark down there. So it could be that - the RAC guy will have a torch.

There's no evidence of water loss so I'm 80% sure it's the sensor or gauge, just want the RAC guy to help eliminate the other 20% of doubt. I'll really kick myself if I overheat it and warp the heads.

The gauge sender's buried down the front of the inlet, obscured by the dizzy. Single terminal thing, unlikely to have fallen off, but quite possible the gauge has failed.

As others have said, if the fans are still cutting in and out ok then it's likely to just be the gauge. They lie anyway, so going without it is unlikely to give you any grief!

The RAC guy had a torch, and after I'd directed him to where the gauge sender is we could see that the connector had indeed fallen off. The plastic looks a bit knackered so it could do with replacing. Distributor cap off to gain access, and a bit of fiddling with bent-nose pliers, and the gauge came to life.

Thanks for everyone's help!

At least we were stopped in the shade, and the locals were friendly...

Has anyone tried these fuses that light up when the fuse blows, seems a good idea when we have dodgy electric schematics and difficult to test fuses.
I was thinking about replacing all my fuses with these, obviously the price on this item is excessive, but other sets available are quite cheap

Just shop around on EBay. I bought them in packs of 5 & 10 and got two complete sets for £20.
You need to search on "LED glow when they blow fuses" and you want the standard ones, not the mini ones.
Loads of people sell them in packs of 5 or 10 of each size, you need a 5 pack each of 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 amp for my car, but every car is different. I simply bought 5 packs of 10 of each size so that I have spares.

Err no, I didn't explain that clearly enough - on my ipad at the time and lacking sleep.

I bought 10 of each fuse, though I thought I would only need a maximum of five of each of 10,15,20,25 and 30 amp, but the whole lot only cost me something like £16.

Much cheaper now, this pack contains 5 of each fuse you need, plus 5 x 5amp fuses you don't need, all for £4.95.
But I would have a count up first, as there are 21 or 22 fuses in the box, and you may find you need more than 5 of some....so just buy two packs.
