Hi guys,

Can someone point me in the direction of quality CV joints at a reasonable price?

My understanding is I'm looking for 108mm x 40mm x 28 spline joints and the inner & outer are the same?

I was tempted by these at £45 each:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171160478448?ssPageName=...

Until I Googled J&R and uncovered a host of bad reviews rolleyes

To be honest I would feel a lot happier with GKN but are there other quality options out there for reasonable money?

Suggestions welcomed scratchchin

You have the size correct, and the inner and outer are indeed identical.
Unfortunately you will be paying well over £300 for a full set of GKNs

Indeed, my research suggests the genuine GKN CVs are quite expensive.

All I remember from fitting CV joints back in the day was it was a very messy job so TBH the job doesn't fill me with excitement, Lloyds have offered me a reasonable price to fit the two N/S joints so I think I might just have them do it.

They buy their joints in from a reputable TVR parts supplier and guarantee all their work, Danny can't confirm the make of the CVs but says they've fitted lots of them with no issues whatsoever and that's good enough for me.

It's just a shame LSD are a 200 mile round trip from me, but I trust them, I'd rather travel and have it done properly than use someone more local I'm unsure of.

Dave.

I went for the Prolinx ones too, the uprated ones for a 930. Also bought their special grease. Powers were interested in them after I asked them for some original ones (but were out of stock).
They are quality items.

Prolinx - http://www.prolinx.biz/pages/Products/ViewProduct/...

No, the grease I used was Prolinx own as recommended, Bel Ray at £50 per tube, so not cheap! It is thicker and more adhesive than the normal grease you get in the small packets with CV boots. Is it worth it? - don't know. just peace of mind.

For longevity, the best CV boots are Bailcast Duraboots. They are not pure rubber so do not crack and I have never had one fail on me yet. They come with a 2 year guarantee and come with clips and grease in the boxes. DBC800 is the part number.

You can shop online for a cheaper price probably.

GKN every time - in my experience the pattern ones do not 'lock' on extension and can/do pull apart if the geo is slightly less than ideal. Ask my AA man who came out to recover me two nights running hehe

I've recently had a nightmare with my CV joints, left me in the pits for a full day at Spa.

I made the mistake of using pattern parts - bought from a well known TVR parts supplier. Had the problem of them pulling/falling apart under high load high suspension travel.

Use the genuine GKN and make sure they are assembled the correct way round. The grove on the OD of the joint should be to the outside of the shaft.

If it stated genuine parts used at the time of purchase then l would ask for your money back. If they are selling pattern parts this should be advertised as such, it is quite misleading.

This is the problem with genuine TVR parts, it doesn't magically make a part genuine just because it's been purchased from a TVR parts specialist.

Where do the TVR parts specialist buy their parts from anyway, anywhere and everywhere is the answer, a quick wave of the genuine TVR wand as soon as these parts go into stock and they suddenly become genuine TVR parts.

My guess is back in the 90's TVR bought in proper CV joints direct from GKN, just like they used the very highest rated Ford Motorsport specified "Z" T5 gearbox (M-7003-Z) which BW rated at 330 lb/ft of torque. I recently discovered this when replacing my 5th gear synchro hub which on the "Z" box is different (No "Reverse Brake" feature) to all other World Class T5s offered by BW during the same period.

It does seem there was a genuine policy of fitting quality components at TVR back in the day, do the TVR parts specialists follow the same policy or are they more driven by improving their margins to the cost of component quality & longevity?

We now have a definitive link to the correct GKN CV joint, can someone also provide a definitive link to the correct quality boots?
