Greetings gents,
im looking to purchase the mod-wise 'hot start kit', as a precaution really, got caught out on my TVR S with a hot start issue ended up sitting in the rain piss arsing about trying to get it started (eventually it did) anyway..

I called up the chap from modwise & he wanted to know where the ' starter solenoid circuit' was on a 93 chimaera, under the footwell? (as it can differ through models apparently.)

I haven't got my chim infront of me as its at the garage and bank holiday etc, could someone help me out & tell me if the starter solenoid circuit on a 93 chim is under the footwell?

thanks
Steve

Hi Steve,

it was a while ago but I can remember that my 93 car had different wiring set-up to the later ones that the kit is designed for. you may be lucky but I wasn't!

Hi, thanks for the reply, yeah i think mine would be most likely the same then, glad i didn't just order on impulse this time.. I wonder if it could still be adjusted to work wherever it needs to go on the mk1 models.

Is there another way around this hot start problem if not?

Hi

I have an early ’93 and I believe the wiring is different – mainly because they don’t have an immobiliser – just an alarm. For my alternative fix I took a new supply to the starter solenoid (which is on the starter itself) from a new relay fitted in a convenient place in the engine bay. I mounted a standard 12v 30A SPDT relay (e.g. from Maplin for about £4) on the back of the alternator. You can use a new 15A cable to supply the starter solenoid from the big brown +12v wire on the back of the alternator via an inline fuse and this relay. The relay is switched by the original low current supply to the starter solenoid – the wire is removed form the starter and extended up to the new relay. These relays need only about 7V and very low current to "switch" - so even hot TVR wiring can manage that!

circuit diagram:

Picture of relay and fuse on back of the alternator. No hot start problems since. Also you don't need to change the original wiring so you can always go back to the original if you wish.

It looks like you have been sent a solution.

I checked my post history for the old car - I ended up changing the ignition switch. It takes the load of the starting and I took the view that the original lasted 15+ years, so whilst a new electrical feed and separate relay would be a better solution, it would be easier for me to change the switch internals..

If you have no immobiliser which can be the source of the original problem adding a relay, and possibly renewing that ignition switch should see you problem free for years to come.
