A couple of Wedge headlamp pod questions ..
Discussion
Hi Peeps.
After going over a bump in the road the other day my O/S headlamp pod started mis-behaving by not retracting once up...I spent 2 hours on Monday removing the pod and cleaning and checking the connections.
Put it back together and the pod wouldn't lift so after removing and replacing the pod 4 times i gave up...I have checked fuses, Relays and for any loose connections or wires...So my question is....
Can the plug be removed with pod installed?...And is there a wire i can test..(Bearing in mind I'm an electrical dimwit still so no live wires please)....that will show i have what i should have....
Im just waiting for the engine to cool so that i can check the earths on the chassis and suspension turret...
Cheers

Hi Zig.
My offside lamp is also intermittent. I usually crouch down, stick a hand through the hole where the manual lifter knob is and waggle the wires around, the lamp always lifts. This saves having to take the bulb etc out.
As always, why do a job properly when you can bodge it in a fraction of the time!
Saying that, I cleaned the connectors in the pod recess with electrical cleaner and the problem seems to have disappeared.

Thanks mate... That was my first port of call......My offside lamp is also intermittent. I usually crouch down, stick a hand through the hole where the manual lifter knob is and "waggle the wires" around, the lamp always lifts. This saves having to take the bulb etc out.

Cleaned all connectors with a fine needle file and contact cleaner..Checked wires going into plugs...Checked fuses and swapped the relays around...Still nothing..
I did check the engine earths behind the N/S rocker cover and the little one on the O/S lower wishbone...Is there another?...
Cheers

Hi Mark,
Mines is a bit different to yours in that i access the pod mech from the engine bay.
Mine havent worked for over a year! It is a wiring fault somewhere on mine tho.
The motors work fine.
To check the motors i ran a live wire direct from the battery and an earth to the radiator. The motors worked fine.
Not had a chance to go thro the rest of the wires.
Dont know if you could do that test easily on your set up?
Marcus

Cheers chaps...I actually remembered that i have a motor that someone gave me at the fest for someone...Whoever that was seems to be turning to be me..Strange...
So my plan is to disconnect the plug and two bullet connectors and plug in the other motor..If it works then bingo and if its doesn't then b**l**ks..
So "Bingo" or "B**l**ks"....
I will test the plug if no joy on the other motor...Oh and i have been reminded about the earth where the resistors are on the N/S suspension turret...I couldn't see them as my cold air feed is in the way...

It could be dirty motor connections, turn the headlamps on and poke the handle of a hammer through the manual lifter hole, give the motor a couple of taps to see if it makes a momentary connection. if it works then it could be the contacts in the motor gearbox housing....I may though be talking total gibberish but worth a try though!

The main earthing point for all the electrics at the front of the car is the left-hand suspension tower, below the airflow meter. There should be about 8 to a dozen ring terminals on an M6 stud. The earths to the wishbones are irrelevant; they're actually there to earth the suspension to the chassis! The reason being that the Metalastik bushes insulate the suspension from the chassis and the rotation of the wheel bearings can cause static buildup which, in the good ole' days of AM radio, led to a whistling crackle over Jimmy Young [other DJs were available]

I used to enjoy that...The earths to the wishbones are irrelevant; they're actually there to earth the suspension to the chassis! I forgot about that earth as my cold air feed that i put in hides it...
