Hi, I know it's been talked about before, but does anyone know of a source for a filler cap in decent condition?

I've had a call to say that mine arrived safely and had been inspected.
The cost to carry out the refurbishment is £75.00 and should take approx 3 weeks, this was a week or so ago.

Once i have it in my possession i will post pics and opinion.

Can we link these together to save possible confusion

Last weekend I was at an event at which there was a meet of the Scimitar and Middlebridge Scimitar guys. I had a chance for a chat with one of the key parts guys for their club, he was actually the guy who bought the last few unassembled ones off TVR! They have exactly the same issue of course. The late Scimitars and the Middlebridge ones have the same cap, they are all of the same sort of age as ours. They looked at stainless replacement some years ago but even then they were talking £120-150 each and there were some issues getting enough demand together. Their view is that, if we were able to source a replacement cap at a reasonable price, they would be very interested in coming in with us to increase the numbers. With the rising value of the S and the late Scimitar (and particularly the desireable Middlebridge ones) more people are willing to invest now.

Remind me, apart from the research DJR7 is doing into rechroming, someone was looking again at remanufacturing?

I suspect the only realistic option would be manufacture in China, either in stainless or possibly in Aluminium. I have one possible contact with a company which sources cycle component manufacture in China. I could follow that up but not if someone else has research in progress. I do not have a spare cap to send off though!

Guys, I'm in Hungary and I know quite a few very reasonably priced ( = very cheap ) machining shops here. If anyone has a spare cap, I can get some drawings made to get some quotes.

The guy that was looking to get it scanned was Nigel, who has my (glorious and new) cap to scan. I'll see if there's any update on progress.

Quite by chance I visited a company this morning that does high pressure aluminium casting, and are real experts in alloys, so another line of enquiry may open up..

That certainly does sound interesting Ray. The originals were pressure diecast with, I understand, the magnesium included in the alloy to make it flow better. Production technology has moved on and there is lots of high quality diecast alloy around now, witness the developments in cycle parts alone. The biggest cost will be in making the die but presumably modern profiling tools have made that a whole lot easier than when I was involved.

Mazak I think is the composition.

Mezak was the original composition Ray, aluminium with magnezium as a kind of flux. The long term disadvantages of the magnesium 'migrating' and of a form of bi-metallic corrosion resulting, was not understood. Metallurgy has come on a long way since then.

CNC is getting a lot cheaper these days and I wonder how much it would cost for a prototyping shop to make a small production run.

Update;
At the NEC I spoke to Matthew Davies, Director of CEANDESS (http://www.ceandess.uk/) of Wolverhampton who already manufacture a range of fuel caps for classics. We brought in Middlebridge Scimitar to the discussion. The combined demand from the two might make manufacture viable. They would be looking at 3D profiling and will evaluate in either stainless or aluminium. They will also talk to TVR Parts Ltd to see if they would be prepared to obtain some for stock to increase the order quantity. Advantage for us of course is that they are already in this business, know the techniques and want to expand their range in this niche market. I have agreed to contact him again to follow up.

Smokey? Ha ha! smokinhippy

So who is the bandit Steve?

Good work Richard, I'm sure a lot of us would be interested in nice shiny fuel caps at a fair price.
