I believe some of the better dealers treat the original variety fuse as a service item. Not sure if they change every year, but probably every two at the 12000 mile service.

Personally, once changed to the midi variety, I've never had a failure.
I have......it caused the rear axle to lock as the engine died as I changed down for a sharp corner, but as it was on an airfield trackday I merely mowed down some cones as I did a 360 spin. That was my second fuse failure, so I knew immediately why the engine wouldn't turn over. Car running again 10 minutes later after a jump start..

Cheers for all of the suggestions. Much appreciated.

I've not had any time this weekend to tinker further but I went for a 15 minute drive this afternoon and it seemed to run perfectly. Makes me think it's a connector / bad contact / broken wire. Or a duff sensor. All I've done since it was barely driveable is test the voltage on the MAF, take a spark plug out and take the coolant temp sensor plug off and put it back on. Hopefully it's just a bad contact that I've disturbed. I will investigate further when I get a minute!
