Important but, magnified

Usually on the left hand side, just behind.....

Cheers for the info, didn't spot it whilst I had the radiator out but that doesn't mean it wasn't there! rolleyes

Had my mind on other things !

Have posted on the "fuel smell" thread and conscious that we have hijacked the thread so a question on the mod to the emission control pipe offside rocker to tee then to plenum / air intake.

Follow up to chimpongas .

Are plastic one way valves ok or are the metal ones preferable?

Yes sorry about the previous hijack! Thanks to COG for fantastic info, any idea where to source the one way valves?

Found a few on ebygum (as usual!).

Here, these are plastic...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152044212449?_trksid=p20...

cheap enough to experiment with..

or these metal versions,
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aluminium-Non-Return-Che...

Not sure if these are the ones Chimpongas means...

There is more info on the fuel smell thread to that Chimpongas has added..

Here is a suitable intake stub cover, plug, I think. 16mm pipe diameter in different colours !

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190892513049?_trksid=p20...

and here is an intake filter for the stepper motor pipe intake.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190885445618?_trksid=p20...

These are 15mm but a short length of copper tube should sort it along with the appropriate clips.

Bits for the Stepper motor pipes arrived today, Nice silicone cap fits perfectly on the stub from the air intake / plenum and a small cone filter fitted to the pipe from the stepper motor using a 15mm copper tube insert.
"TVR tie wrap " rolleyes fastening to the throttle frame out of the way of the throttle bits / spring... just need to test it now.

The other breather pipe I am still debating about, need a suitable pcv but I have another silicone cap ready for that stub too smile

Liking the look of that, thanks for the supplier info. I'll be very interested to hear your thoughts on how effective this mod seems for you. I've just reassembled mine as stock for the moment post body removal. As I haven't ever driven the car I haven't anything to compare to. COG's detailed thoughts on this make perfect sense to me so I'm assuming I will make the changes when it's been running again.

I know it is more money, but every multiple car owner would be wise to invest in a jump starter pack, which also doubles as a mobile battery powered tyre inflator.
Mine starts all my cars, including the diesels and the big engined ones. And of course can be used to rescue family members who have left their lights on and gone shopping.

That is the one thing they don't tell you - you need to charge it about every three weeks, or you don't have enough juice in it when it is pressed into service.

You need to spend about £100 to get one that's fit for purpose, keep it in the boot of your 'daily', plugged into an aux socket most of the time and it'll last for years.

So the idle now has no metering of the air flow so does not know how much fuel to add. On a car with o2 sensors I expect it would cope but on cars without then it would run lean.

Does it meter it?
I wondered too but its on the outside of the butterfly, i.e. its just fed from air on the filter side?

I am just following some suggestion brought up here regarding the bad air intake and hoping to improve the idle.

If it doesn't work all is not lost and i can return to standard easily, only a tenners worth of stuff in the end rolleyes two gallons and 35 miles worth !

When you do, make sure it is rated for bigger engines, and get one that has a built in compressor (so useful when dick-head son-in-law drives to work, knowing he has a soft tyre, and comes out at 6 pm to a pancake flat tyre.). Also useful for the inevitable time you have a puncture on the motorway and of course your spare is flat.....

Well Steve, you appear to be correct clap

The engine runs like a t**t under 1500rpm, cutting out as well, no tickover.

Done a few adjustments to it but complete crap, took off the filter and reverted to the original setup and back to normal....lumpy tickover but at least it doesn't cut out.

So, it would appear that the stepper motor pipe actually takes some form of metered air from the MAF? as you actually surmised, any thoughts on how its done?
