I'm sure this one has previously been done to death - but just for the record, here goes...
Which exhaust mod creates the best/most noise? Is it;
1) Retain cats but sleeve the silencer box, or...
2) Stock exhaust with pre-cats removed. (Main cat retained)
Mine has the former and a mate is looking to buy a Chimaera with the latter. How will they compare?

Hi Peter,
I think of it as front noise and back noise...
The pre-cats out create more front noise, which I find irritating. The car isnt a lot louder from the exhaust (back noise) but is noisier on the motorway becuase of the front noise..
I have had a couple of scenarios on two cars and would have main cat removed and either ACT Cherry bombs or part sleeved if I had the choice, with pre-cats in place.

That's a good description, front /rear noise.
I've got pre cars removed( takes lots of heat away) slightly noisier
I'm using main cat, and sleeved exhaust
The noise with a standard box is def below you and often drones more at around 2100 revs.
The noise with a sleeved exhaust is louder but mostly it's behind you and on a motorway at 70-90 mph quieter than my standard exhaust inside the car.
If I went to a Clive Y piece so no main cat I'd have to use standard pipe or it would be to loud IMO
I've done a noise test with the above set up and achieved 104 decibels at 4000 revs.
I've done a similar test with the standard exhaust and it was 94-97 decibels so quite a difference but in the car it's quieter with the sleeved exhaust!
My neighbours prefer the standard pipe but I like the sleeved one.

That would drive me mental although it would drown out all the rattles, ,
That's the same set up as Rich (Sheel) it's not as loud as it first appears, floor it and it's pretty mental then though.I like that set up, as soon as you feather the throttle back and cruising it's surprisingly quiet, same thing as sleeved, the noise is out the back and so not bad on the ears.

Same here, precats out, main in, sleeved silencer, kent 218 cam......luverly sound !!I've got pre cars removed( takes lots of heat away) slightly noisier

Neighbours sorted, took the batteries out of their hearing aids.........
How can you all get it so wrong every time......
It's.... pre-cats out, Clive F 'Y', and standard box..... so, no cats, and standard box Mine was sleeved but with all cats in when I bought it. Then went pre-cats out retaining sleeved box. Then went Clive F 'Y' but put box back to standard...
So, awesome went I bought it, reasonably awesome with pre-cats out, but then totally epic (that's better than awesome if you're not up to speed with the terminology) as it is now..... Of course it helps if you have a larger capacity modified lump because you're putting much more pressure/gas the exhaust system in the higher rev range So it's louder (ya know like a massive fart rather than a little fart)
Hope this helps, Chilli

This is my setup and while it delivers the right V8 soundtrack when I want it to, its also wife friendly and fine for touring.
1. Pre-cats removed
2. ACT "Y" piece
3. Standard silencer box
So like Chllli I have no cats and the standard box, having listened carefully to all the combinations this setup definitely delivers the best compromise between V8ness, usability and the ability to kill wildlife with pollutants
Everyone wins except the dolphins, but ask yourself this.... "when did a dolphin last do anything for you?"

Let's clear this up
1 pre cats out
2 main cat in place
3 sleeved exhaust.
The reasons for this are obvious when you hear my car
Stand at the front and it's very quiet, the main cat in means you can hear just how silky smooth my engine is.
Stand at the rear and you hear a vintage V8 with that straight through racer vibe going on.
All IMHO obviously
When on the pipe I think mine sleeved sounds more meaningful

Agreed. It's the best sound you can get from a Chim, without it sounding like a tug boat.1. Pre-cats removed

Tug boat, if you grew up in a boat yard maybe, if you grew up around racing it's the sound of thunder
As and when I buy a Clive Y piece that's when it will become the best sound Combination.
The ACT pipes with Clive's Y is easily the best sound, but living with it would be another matter, although the car I drove with that set up was not loud in the car at all, again it all seemed to be behind you and away from your ear drums!
One day my car might become a weekend toy rather than a regular work horse, I'd go for the Act Cherry bomb set up all day long although I'd not be able to do a trackday!
