Firstly i sacrificed 17mm long socket, and cut a minimum 3mm strip out of its length, for the Lambda wires to pass through, then removed the sensors

I used a large lamp to help see down the manifold, its difficult if you dont

Well, all the negatives start when you have a drill in your hand, and you know once first bit of damage is done, there's no turning back.

Firstly i used a 300 x 15mm sds bit with drill on hammer, push as many holes in as you can, bearing in mind the angle you are going in at,you really dont get that many holes.
Then i used a long 10mm bar, and brayed the hell out of the cat, working from the centre out, dont be scared and be to gentle as you'll be there all day,the first cat i managed to get out in 20mins
After first lot of drilling

Dragging out the bits

Empty

The second took a little longer as it moved to the back of the manifold and i had to drag back to get at the bloody thing, thgis one came out in bits to start, then a large chunk.

ENSURE YOU MOVE THE LAMBDA SENSORS BEFORE DOING THIS FIRST,ITS NOT WORTH THE RISK FOR THE SAKE OF A 17MM SOCKET

A pile of old cat

I then removed any bits by hand, then vacuum both manifolds out with a narrow hoes on the vac,and thought i had got all the bits, but for piece of mind and stated the engine with Y still off,to my amazement a few bits flew around the garage,so be warned always start the engine so all bits are thrown out before you put Y back in
Short video link at start up

All cleaned up and cats now missing

Back together, just had to show off the fitting of the Clive F Y piece before i put the clamps back on

The results in my opinion are well worth the effort,it was like getting my old girl back(blue Chim),she felt as if she was let free nothing holding back, free reving, sounded awesome with much louder tones, and just brought a smile to my face all yesterday afternoon

Anyone holding back on doing these works, get on with it,its simple.woohoo

These pre cats,,, what's the point in them?
Don't effect emissions testing as that's done at running temps so are they there purely for cleaner emissions out the exhaust until it gets warm?
ETA here's my other mad cap idea, are the pre cats an attempt to stop burning the main cat out! I've seen pics of main cats with holes burning through the middle of the main cat, as I still run the main cat I'd like to know if the flames I get out the exhaust when changing gear at high revs is ok hehe

When I did mine and looking at them before you break them up they do seem like a big restriction compared to the gaping hole afterwards.

I'm sure my engine felt freer with them removed, less back pressure and revved upto to the limiter quicker.

You have perfectly matched heads/manifolds Y piece there Mark.
A lot of people have regular problems with manifold gaskets blowing,

When my manifolds were nipped up to the heads I would have needed a ratchet to line the Y up so rather than stress the manifold welds I elected to loosen everything, connect up the Y and slowly work around all the bolts until I had evenly pulled the manifolds back to the heads, and they've never leaked. Took frigging ages but well worth the diligence I reckon.

Holy thread resurrection!
I'm going to have a go at this in the next few weeks. So, I have the hammer, a drill (both battery and 240v) and various chisels that can be destroyed. I'm thinking a drill bit would be a good idea, I see a few threads suggest a long 10mm masonry bit, is that about the right diameter? Or would a flexidrive with a shorter bit work better? And last question, how long (thick?) Is the precat? I'm guessing not very if you can get it out with a long shaft bit at an angle? And I'll pull the the lambdas out before I get digging!

Sorry for the perhaps obvious questions.

I watched an expert doing it - he hit the cold chisel about 5 times harder than I would have risked.
And I had the manifolds off the car and held in a vice.

Be careful. The manifolds are very thin and it’s easy to get through the honeycombe of the Cat and start distorting the manifold with a chisel.
I found I had one that came out almost complete and another that gripped the sides of the manifold and took a combination of a very long masonry drill bit and various long screwdrivers to slowly tap and dislodge the pieces of the stubborn one out.
I had manifolds off the car so made it a lot easier to get around them.
