2000 car with BTR DIF Recently I've noticed a whine from my Dif, no knocking that I can detect but a definite whine. Sounds like a bearing?

Replaced Dif oil but exactly the same.

It's not wheel bearings.

Looking at past threads and in particular Sardonicus comments

Pinion bearing wear.
Input drive flange nut.

Who do we use for Dif overhaul?

Thanks in advance smile

Evening Alun, I'd give Competion Transmissions a call at Markyate ( down the A5, south of Milton Keynes). I think the guy you need to speak to is Dave, aka "the gearbox man".

Hi Alun....definitely not your rear wheel bearings? When I got mine I thought the diff was noisy. When I was changing the suspension bushes on the rear wishbones I thought I would have a look at the wheel bearings, no play in the wheel but ran very rough. Replaced both sides, best days work in a while...."diff noise" gone.

" best days work in awhile",,,, hehe

I'm pretty sure it's the input bearing as the whine slowly increases with speed and doesn't deviate around corners. I've had the wheel bearings checked and they appear ok!
The Dif has always been st at low revs and has a good 2-3 inches of play in the wheels before it takes up the slack,,,
I nearly went round Rich's and robbed his,,, imagine him at this thought hehe as his is smooth as silk and had practically no play whatsoever.

I so wish it was wheel bearings Pete. frown

I've got a couple of options for reconditioning which includes doing it myself with a friend! He knows these difs and says it's no big deal to set pre loads etc.....

It's only just audible from 40 mph so I want it repaired before it starts knackering the gears up!

It's all pointing to me taking the car off the road and doing a mega job on the Chassis. smile
Trouble is I'll just become like nearly all other owners,,,, drive it a couple of times a year,,, I'd rather sell the poxy thing!
Rant over smile

I'd love to say "the whine increases with speed and doesn't deviate around corners" sounds like my Mrs in the passenger seat on the TVRCC track day at Cadwell Park.........but bless her, she kept silent out on track, except when I had two wheels up on the outer kerb at Park Corner at around 70 mph, when she uttered only two words under her breath.....the first one was "Oh". The second one wasn't ladylike, so I won't repeat it.....

smile,,,,,, I've got the hump with it now,,,,, wink

Well I suppose at least I can actually stop this thing whining with a few quid,,, women,, that takes all you've got to keep em quiet hehe
Sorry ladies only having fun smile

Has anyone had one of these difs apart... I better start looking at videos.

I had a short chat with someone today who's a proper mechanic, 40 years experience and still pulling E types apart in his sleep,, a bright chat, grammar school, father head teacher but he became a mechanic but what a guy, I've known him awhile and his stories are the biz hehe

He said it was easy ???!!!!! smilesmilesmile ?

Sometimes a garage struggles to frankly do the job,,,, then a proper old school mechanical engineer turns up and everything changes,, he's working at my mates place and what a breath of fresh air he is... I'll have a serious chat and take it from there.

I've got the hump that bad I've not rang anyone yet, pissed off ain't the word, cars driving like a dream on my Rainsports and shocks, Iridium plugs and mapping is joyous, the ride is where I want it and the cars totally brilliant then all that peace of mind shattered hehe shattered i say by this bloody whine! It never ends does it,,,,,

I better get started, spring will be here soon wink

Hi Alun, the diff is a meaty old lump so watch when you take it out.....I had the luxury of the body being off when I took mine out. Didn't need to dismantle the internals, so work was limited to redoing the rear cover seal which was leaking and a clean and paint, check the breather and new oil.

As some encouragement to you there's a set of unused Powerflex bushes at home for the BTR diff if you can make use of them.

Ha, ha...Rich's car as a donor for bits....he's gonna love that!!
