I'm pretty sure if there was a hidden cam you'd laugh at the footage. Especially upon reconnecting the battery and the alarm going off again hahahah

Was it clockwise?... more like clockwork orange at times.

I did first check the connections were tight, and they were clean and tight. So as per Chimpongas (thank you for taking the time to give me such a detailed explanation of the term 'knackered') the battery is now disconnected from car and on charge.

I had previously uprated the cable and also done the 'Clarion' hot start mod.

Really though... fussy when it's too hot and fussy when it's too cold.... something of a princess me thinks.

Knackered? Hmmm, I don't see that in my copy of The IEE Wiring Regulations 17th Edition (BS 7671)

I'd changed the two CR1220 batteries in the key fob but no difference.

Misleadingly, the original battery didn't show the same symptoms - just sluggish turnover and so I replaced it about four years ago.

I guess cold winter nights killed it quickly and humanely.

Right - just to update you all as you deserve to know for all the effort you put in on my behalf...

Chim pong ass was correct saying it was a combination of factors.
However, having charged it and tried it again it actually made no difference so (some days later as I have been ill) I took it to a battery specialist who quickly checked it and gave me a funny look as if I was winding him up "14 volts - that's fully charged" was his reply. (I didn't quite catch the 'you pillock' under his breath.

He then gave me the chance to explain my symptoms. "We'll try a drop test". I thought that should finish it! A short time later he came back and said "whilst it is fully charged, there is a fault between two of the cells"

As soon as the ignition is turned on, the effect of this fault is equivalent to an undesired leakage to earth. So my battery which was actually exactly 5 years old (not 4 as I thought) was "knackered" but not in the usual way. It was a 600CCA but I now have a 630 CCA.

I did ask about the AGM (Absorbed Glass Matt) type of battery but the competent person said they are happy to supply such a battery but I would need a different type of alternator.

Anyway, following advice on this thread about the noise in a confined space, I have only just this afternoon put on my ear defenders and connected up... those alarms are LOUD. BUT you will be pleased to know that all seems to be well now. Thanks one and all.
