Im suprised lucas oils are not mentioned , they have a full range of oils with high zinc content.
The Americans know there stuff when it comes to V8's and Lucas oils are massive in USA .
Worth a look .
They even do a semi synthetic with 10 40 with 1300ppm of zinc content .

I could do with some advice here, being a new owner. I need 5L to keep handy for top-ups, which grade for a 4.0?
The car was serviced when I bought it, the invoice says Mobil Super 3000 X1 5W40, a fully synth and in line with the viscosity spec advised by the Bible. £27 for 5 L. Happy days, but I'd expected to pay more. My Saab shed takes Mobil 1 which costs more than that (from now on, it won't!).

The problem is you will get a million different answers, its been covered hundreds of times in the past. The car was serviced when I bought it, the invoice says Mobil Super 3000 X1 5W40, a fully synth and in line with the viscosity spec advised by the Bible. £27 for 5 L. My original handbook states a 5w 50 grade which does not sound like a bad idea to me for cold starts.
Some respected engine builders suggest VR1 Racing whch is a 20/50 others a 10/40 semi!
I use penrite HPR15 as its what the previous owner had, its a bit thick in cold temperatures as i found out last week when trying to pour at 4 degrees!
Ideally next time i think im going to go for the penrtite HPR10 which is a 10/50.
Made your choice any easier?

The thicker grade Penrite is good on the older designed engines and ones with a few miles under its belt. My original handbook states a 5w 50 grade which does not sound like a bad idea to me for cold starts.

You have to consider the oil galleries and thicker oil can give you higher pressure but lower flow to the important bits.
My 2000 year 450 engine had a pronounced tapping from cam area on thicker oil.
Reverted back to a 10/40 semi and the noise stopped!
Most the engine wear occurs on cold start up or being thrashed, but for most of us it's the cold starts that are important and your oil needs to be able to reach the top asap. There's a reason engine builders like Powers stick with 10/40 !
I've been hood winked into thinking a thicker oil will protect for longer.
When you remove the Shell,Helix Race oil 10/40 that Powers put in the car it seems piss thin.
So I use a thicker oil and guess what, cold starts the engines noisier. It's took me some time to realise the Shell is the oil to use because it works instantly on start up. It's properties can withstand our high engine temps well so it's not going to break down easily IMHO

They show a lot of stockists but they dont all have the oils. I have been into a few listed in my area and they keep a few of the smaller products such as friction modifiers etc.
Yes, my local Motor factors used to have a little demo thing on the counter.............Never asked if they actually stocked Lucas oil?

You might have trouble with that one, Classic Oils is now the sole UK distributor of Pentrite and I don't believe they stock HPR10. Moss used to get if from the former importer Forest, but since Forest lost the sole UK distributor rights Moss have been showing 'out of stock'.http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/penrite-hpr-10w-50-fu...
Talk to Guy Lachlan at Classic Oils but I have a feeling the HPR10 sits too close to the HPR15 product to make it worth his while stocking both? In February 2017 Guy sold his hardware store in Aylesbury and moved Classic Oils to Bicester Heritage allowing him to concentrate that business, this does give him more space so things may change but there are after all only so many different products a business can stock.
Worth a call though as I could be completely wrong

So that's £17.95 plus P&P, if you don't mind me asking what did they sting you for postage?

£9.00 (inc VAT) as they only use couriers (but at least I should have it today)
Personally I prefer a 10w 50 fully synth - last few years using Silkolene Fuchs Titan Pro S - expensive but all the attributes incl high ZDDP content and correct API. Opie do some offers during the year...
IMO the 20w is a tad too thick for RV8 colder starts and did notice a marked lack of circulation when I tried this viscocity for a short time, similarly I found the 5w a tad too thin - but all IMO. If the price of FS oils do alarm folks theres a good case for using a semi synth & changing it more often.
After 20 years my 5 litre is still on same cam with no engine issues to date using the 10/40 & latterly 10/50 F/S, runs consistent oil pressure & stays clean when changed if these factors can be used to gauge oil specs.

Valvoline Racing VR1 for me with the Moly-Graphene based Everglide as my oil additive. This combo is just perfect. Improved my fuel efficiency and remarkably increased my mpg. Have read that it is quite a popular oil additive for old cars as it protects the parts and reduces wear and friction. Everglide is quite a popular name in the industrial field such as the oil and gas drilling and marine industry so I got curious on how powerful it is. Pretty good so far.
