After privately buying a fully working TVR Chimaera 4.0 1997, on the journey home the drivers side window failed, of course this is now in the open postion rather than closed!

I've checked the switchgear which appear okay (swapped window switches between the working passenger side window and the failed drivers side - no success). I get the impression that these windows are jointly fused, therefore not a blown fuse either.

Has anybody got any ideas of what this fault could be and how much my wallet is going to be damaged?

Is it just a case of resigning myself to a new electric window motor?

By failed is is just stuck/wedged open...? Mine did this once as the glass in the runners was obviously more of a frictional force than what the motor could apply upwards.. I pulled the glass up with my hand whilst pressing the switch, and hey presto.. ..applied some slidy stuff to the runners and its been fine ever since..

NB.. you don't hear the motor "straining" in this instance, it is all silent.

Hope this helps

Cheers
Matt.

Thanks for your advice Matt.

I haven't tried that as I was reluctant to end up holding the entire window glass in my hand after ripping it out of the door!

When I press the window switch there is complete silence, no whirring at all.

Should I try your advice?

Gotta be worth a go... I don't mean gripping with both hands and trying to get the glass above your head here.. just some "help"..

... correct.. no Whirring or anything, the motors are silent if they are under load but can't move.. give it a go, you've got nothing to loose...

As a guide, did the window "labour" a bit on the way down, then grind to a stop..?

Cheers,
Matt

PS.. if that doesnt work I expect its just a connection to the window motor, not the motor itself..

What lubricant did you use on the window runners? Mine are starting to stick a bit and could do with some help.

Thanks

Had this problem the other day although luckily it was in the up position.

Turned out to be the connector on the motor itself. I think it gets quite damp in the door so it was a bit corroded. I cleaned it up and gave it a wiggle and off we went.

The connector on my car was on the front side of the motor with blue and black wiring going into it from a plug loose in the door with yellow and black wiring to it. It was easily accessible by just removing the speaker. Although I ended up taking the whole motor out before going for the obvious clean of the terminals. Doh

I lubricated using silicone lubricant from Halfords. Made a bit if a mess but it has speeded up the windows no end.

Hope this helps.

Ed

PS Enjoy your new motor

This isn't very technical but it worked for me. Pulled out the electric window switch, checked plug etc, all seemed fine. Wiggled the loom around a bit and it started working again, put it back, has not missed a beat since. You never know, may be worth a try.

My passenger window stopped in the up position. Looked at the fuses, tried the wire wiggle trick. No use, it needed a new motor.

Try the connection in the door behind the speaker.

Can't help laughing

It's the worst job I've had to do on mine (worse than glassing a new front end on ) you need to get the speaker out and reach inside the door to undo 3 10mm nuts (handy hint, replace then with wing nuts on re-assembly) I used a 1/2 indrive socket (no ratchet) to help give me a bit more purchase, there are more threads on the subject but this is about the jist of it

See previous thread, good advice worked for me with exactly the same problem.

Good luck.

idiot question: noted that you don't need to take the door panel off, but where do you put the lubricant? in the runners?

Go to Halfords and purchase RUBBER AND NYLON LUBRICANT. Yellow can - £3ish, lower window spray liberally in front channel, attach long straw off wd40 can if available, peer into dorr from above and spray into rear runner. BINGO!.. I find this stuff a lot better than WD40 for this type of job and doesnt smell so oily.

So, I thought I would sort out the slow passenger window.

I took off the door card, and want to meet the mutant whose arm can reach the fourth nut at the bottom, just beyond my reach.

I siliconed the runners and liberally greased everything I could get my fingers to.

All was going well and I decided to follow another suggestion here, to lubricate the motor. Which has, pretty much, killed it. The window motors now make a very sick sound and drive the windows at glacial pace.

Took the motor cover off with a star spanner to discover that inside the shell is the electrical bits, not the gears.

So I reckon I probably need 2 new motors.

Research on the wonder web leads me to believe that this motor was shared with a number of cars, including our mates in Stuttgart, and the Ford family.

Does anyone know which cars these can be reliably sourced from? They all look the same on eBay.

Thanks and Happy New Year,

Rich

Try this. Also Douglas Valley for £100, motor + arm. Chim and Griff units are the same. Use Servisol silicone grease for the motor drives. Clean all the oil off the comutator & brush faces.

There's a similar thread running on the Griff forum (if you can lower yourself or elevate yourself depending from whose viewpoint.....!)
