Best of luck mate,

Sounds like you're on top of it anyway

And thanks for reminding me to change my air filter

No need to top up with the engine running, the top of the swirl pot is above the top of the engine after all. After draining the system you should bleed the rad first, fill up the swirl pot and undo the bolt on the rad by the washer bottle, but I guess you already did that

I have tried that Ben - but I'm sure there is a fundamental error here... the top of the swirl pot is not at the top of the system, the top branch coming from the pot goes above the pot, as does the adjoining hose - surely a design error? How is it possible to pour water uphill? Which is why ATG said to run the engine/pump I presume....

Thats it.. the branch you describe isn't from it, but to it.. and is effectively pump driven. All that aside, the air left in the hose above the top of the water level in the swirl pot should not be that significant considering you don't fill the swirly pot to the brim anyway, plus all cars seem to like the level slightly different too.. Some S Series only want about 4-5" of water showing in the pot, any more and they kindly dump out :-)

Mat are you confusing the swirl pot and the expansion pot ??

Swirl pot should be full, any expansion then goes to the expansion pot (or from it)

Expansion pot... where the £$*( is that..? and no I really meant the swirl pot, my S used to run with it half full. And I think the bible states to fill the swirl pot on the Chim to about 2" from the top surely.. !?

Cheers,
Matt.

Edited to add. and anyway the expansion pot/tank should be empty when not running too !? (wherever it is)

No, should have coolant in it, most (ie not TVRS) have a min and max (measured when cold) on them

Bible 2 goes into great length describing the fact that some cars are 2 inchers, some are middlers and my current Griff is a bit at the bottomer so to speak. Early cars did not have a second ally expansion tank just to confuse things even more. Importent thing is to learn what is normal for your car.

So for the record,

The swirl pot is the one with the brass screw plug.
And the expansion tank is the one with the "blue" twist off top.

But you said "Expansion tank should be empty when not running" which isn't true

You got it Al... I believe it was the pre 95 models that only had the swirl pot...

But anyway, thanks to all again for your views - I will post the results of the full service in about 2 weeks - bet you can't wait - lol - !

I've got the opposite problem - most of the time temp gauge registers below bottom of the scale. Car seems to run Ok with fan cutting in (a lot in this weather) so have sender unit on order. Crap electrics in these cars!
