I have 215/40 17 Federals on my front 7J wheels at present. No catching. I run 215/45 17 rears, not quite ideal, but what was to hand.
I have a track set of SP 12s, 7.5J front, 8J rear.
215/45 17 front
235/40 18 rear
On my car they don't catch. On a friend's car at Cadwell, you would think he was trying to conceal an Atlantic convoy. hehe

A lot can be achieved by not having your ride height set too low. Are your dampers stock, or after market adjustables?
My shocks are standard. I don't intend to mess with it at all.

I'm genuinely surprised that the 215/45 x 17 don't foul the wheelarch. My 225/50 x 15s are about half tread (diameter when new 606 mm) and they only clear the rear part of the wheel arch when the wheel is turned by about 10mm (and that is static not dynamic, i.e. when moving).

The diameters of the 214/45 x 17 should be 625 mm, i.e. 9.5mm each side more than mine. I feel sure they would catch on my car, but hey, as it's been said many times, they're not all the same. Also, being a higher offset wheel on your car may take the outside of the arc of the tyre edge (if I've explained that right?) slightly further into the arch. I don't want to take that chance so I'll go with the 215/40 x 17s you suggest. Not even all tyres are exactly the same either, as mentioned in regard to 888s before.

215/45/17 did catch on mine but they were the federal 595 R1R`s

They look close

They did look good .

Peter your rims look superb in silver, black will make them disappear with your dark blue colour... white might work but is a little bit "tuner"... your silver wheels are class

Always better to allow a bit more clearance, so wise choice.
For others reading this, my SP12s with the 215/45/17 tyres have R888s on, so only about 4mm of tread, or 8mm less diameter than new road tyres on similar wheels. So the diameter is about 617mm, but the width is slightly more as R888s are about 10mm wider than standard tyres.
The offset of the SP12s is ET25, placing the wheel further out than my Ford fit ET38 - 5 for spacers = ET33, and this is probably why my fronts don't catch, as I have my ride height set unfashionably high to avoid outer edge catching issues. My SP12/R888s combo, on another Chimaera, was laying enough smoke to hide a small fleet of warships, all coming off the outer wheel arches at the rear, but they were catching at the front on turning as well.

We tend to get carried away with making our cars as low as possible, and fitting as wide tyres as possible too. I feel, from my own earlier experience of catching tyres, that we can tend to make a rod for our own backs. Wider tyres can give more rubber on the road, but there are times when "bite" is equally as important, which is why world rally car's snow tyres look like they came off Sir Chris Hoy's track bike.

OK, so they're now fitted. 215/40 x 17 seemed hard to get for the front (and pricey round here) so went for 205/45 x 17 on the front and 225/45 x 17 on the rear. The front looks a bit high because it's just come off jacks.

The wheelarches STILL don't seem that full so I can see why people go for 18". Because the rear wheels are only 7" wide and ET38, they are 11mm further into the wheelarch which can't be taken up by spacers alone. I used 3mm on the front to bring the edges out a bit and retain the asymmetric setup of the standard wheels. I'm not sure about them now to be honest but a few people have looked twice already. Drive it in the dark was the response of a so-called friend. Watch your eyes!!

Are you planning to have the wheels painted or is it a joke ?

You've made several contributions to this thread as have I, they had already been painted by the bloke I won them off on fleabay It's not a joke. Why not have a wild colour? The rest of the car is already silver. These cars are meant to be fun.

Classicline Insurance have been advised that I have fitted 17" alloys, no adjustment to the premium at all, just made a note on my file. They didn't ask for photos, thankfully. wink

To be honest, I doubt I'll keep them on long because of the way they sit in the arches, not the colour. I may even spray my Estorils with plastidip while they're off the car. (Other rubberised paint products are available). Gold probably, maybe orange?
